Paul M. Vanden Boom passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, on Tuesday, September 20, 2022, at the age of 93 ("almost 94", as he would say).
Paul was born in his family's home in Kimberly, Wisconsin, to Isabel (Jansen) and Walter Vanden Boom, on August 6, 1929. Paul attended Kimberly High School, and graduated with the class of 1949. He married Lawana (Lou) Walters, on August 11, 1950, at St. Therese Catholic Church in Appleton, WI. They recently celebrated their 72nd wedding anniversary. Together, Paul and Lou raised seven wonderful children. He was affectionately referred to by his grandchildren as "Grandpa Boom".
Paul had a long career in the printing industry, starting as a pressman's helper at Marathon Corporation, and retiring as a color administrator at American Can Company. Paul had a strong work ethic and solicited ways to help his kids and friends with home projects of any kind. He was grateful to retire at the age of 57, freeing him up to enjoy his farmette. Over thirty two years, he raised many steers, two at a time, and tended chickens, vegetables, and fruit. He enjoyed deer hunting up north and playing cards with lifelong friends. After retirement, Paul took up woodworking, creating a variety of novelties and pieces of furniture to share with his family. He also became an avid bicyclist and proudly announced his daily mileage. He rarely missed a day on his bike, moving to the stationary bike in the wintertime. He stopped biking on a daily basis at 93, only four months before he died.
Paul is survived by his loving wife, Lou, and his seven children, Bill Vanden Boom, Lynn Olson (Gayle), Paula Gutsmiedl, Gail Perry (Paul), Bruce Vanden Boom, Scott Vanden Boom and Brad Vanden Boom; grandchildren, Andrew Vanden Boom (Libby), Brant Olson (Amy Rettler), Kara Phelps (Adam), Nate Olson (Lindsay Weymouth), Jamie Wyngaard (Adam), Alison Nielsen (Peter), Mitch Perry (Sarah Katz), Ahnika Vanden Boom and Vance Vanden Boom (mother Renee), Isabella Vanden Boom and Lilliana Vanden Boom; and great grandchildren, Asher, Lucia, Harper, Paxton, Olive, River, Raegan and Parker. He is also survived by his sister, Betty Allen, and his sister in law, Nancy Kelly (Steve), and many nieces, nephews and friends.
He was predeceased in death by his parents Isabel and Walter, his sisters Dolores Vander Zanden and Rose Keller, and brothers in law Don Vander Zanden, Chuck Keller, Norm Allen and Jim Walters.
Paul will be laid to rest at Holy Name Cemetery, Kimberly, WI. A celebration of his life will be held by his immediate family at a private event.
The family is grateful to the staff at Silverstone Memory Care in Grand Chute and Ascension Compassus for their dedication and their care of Paul during his final months.
