Peggy Davis Bowden, age 85, passed away on Friday, July 19, 2024, after an extended illness. She was born on March 8, 1939, in Fort Valley, Georgia to the late Homer Lee Davis and Velma C. Davis.
Peggy had a deep love and appreciation of rivers, lakes and the ocean. If it involved water fun and adventure, she was happy! Her love of "all things water" included teaching many children to swim and water ski. We can still hear her shouting, "Keep your arms straight and your knees bent" as she towed them behind her ski boat. She was an avid scuba diver and enjoyed her involvement in the Middle Georgia Dive Club, especially with her diving buddy, Shelly Shuman. She loved diving throughout the Caribbean and particularly loved the waters of Grand Cayman.
Peggy had a fulfilling career with Blue Bird Body Company and was thrilled to locate in Gulf Breeze, Florida on Pensacola Bay upon her retirement. She treasured her twelve years of living on the beautiful waters just as she had always wanted. She was an active member of Gulf Breeze United Methodist Church before health issues brought her back to middle Georgia.
The family is grateful for the wonderful care provided first, by the staff at Antebellum Grove Assisted Living facility in Warner Robins, Georgia, and more recently the caring staff at Hatley Healthcare in Clanton, Alabama. Our friends at Southern Care Hospice provide an invaluable service to families in our circumstances and are much appreciated. The family would like to acknowledge, with thanks, the special friendships of Earl Holland and Susan Naylor.
In addition to her parents, Peggy was preceded in death by her husband, Vernon Bowden, her brother Alfred Davis and her sisters Christine Davis and Beverly Powell. Left to cherish her memory are her children Laura Everett (Cobey), David Bowden (Ruthann), Amy Bowden Amerson, and Chip Bowden (Kory). Her grandchildren Ashley Hunnicutt (Brandon), Tyler Stembridge (Abbie), Blake Stembridge (Jessica), Brett Sturgeon (Kelly), Ben Bowden, Blake Sturgeon (Elsa), Mollie Stowe (Taylor) and Breann London (Max) and several great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held in the chapel of Burpee Scott Funeral Home on Saturday, August 10th. Visitation will be from 2:00 – 3:00 with the service at 3:00.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to The Coral Reef Alliance.
