After living a long and full life, Peggy Hollis Tanzer passed away on February 12, 2023 with her children Brad and Kim Tanzer at her side.
Peggy was born on October 12, 1929 in Hollis, Oklahoma to Garda Egan Hollis and Gale Hollis. The expansive landscape of southwest Oklahoma held a place in her heart throughout her life.
After graduating as valedictorian from Hollis High School she attended the University of Oklahoma, where she was a twirler in the Oklahoma University marching band. She majored in journalism and was a member of the Alpha Gamma Delta sorority, and the Gamma Alpha Chi and Theta Sigma Phi professional fraternities. She graduated in 1951 and remained a lifelong OU football fan.
She married Martin Tanzer on leap year day, February 29, 1952 in Oklahoma City, and they moved to northern New Jersey where they began raising their family in the High Crest Lake community. She remained a source of constant support for her family throughout her life.
She served as President of the High Crest Lake Women's Club, which she helped federate, and taught twirling to local girls, and swimming to neighborhood children. She also served as treasurer for the West Milford Youth Football league, where Marty coached and while Brad played on a local team.
The family moved to Minnetonka Minnesota, then to Springfield Missouri, and finally to Clever, where she lived for more than 30 years.
A natural athlete, Peggy rode horses, swam, and skied, but her true passion was tennis. She played throughout her life, until she reached nearly 90 years old. Over the years she played with, and competed in, many clubs and tennis groups.
She also contributed to social causes, especially equal rights for women and racial justice, throughout her life. In Minneapolis she volunteered with the Amicus Group which provides support for those leaving incarceration. In Clever she was active in the local Democratic party. She made the front page of the Springfield newspaper in 2016 protesting the outcome of the presidential election.
Peggy was preceded in death by her husband and many beloved cats. She is survived by her children Bradley Craig Tanzer (Suzan Tanzer) of Clever, and Kim Michele Tanzer (Rod McGalliard) of Gainesville Florida, as well as her sister Chris Peterson of Lubbock Texas, her beloved remaining cat, Precious, and cousins and friends across the country.
A celebration of life will be held in the coming months.
