(Who's likely still cheering on his Tar Heels from the best seat in the house)
Peter Anthony Marks, PhD, Professor Emeritus at Rhode Island College, was born on February 28, 1939, in New York, NY, to George Lincoln Marks and Shirley (Chassy) Marks. He discovered his lifelong calling in academia after earning his PhD in Economics from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, later teaching Economics and Management for 37 years at Rhode Island College. During that tenure, he mentored countless students-challenging them to think more deeply and to question everything. Few could out-debate him, and even fewer left his classroom unchanged.
Peter Marks leaves behind a legacy of commitment to learning, social justice, and lively conversation-whether it took place at a picket line, a classroom podium, or a well-set dinner table. He stood up for what he believed in with unwavering conviction, never hesitating to speak out when he saw injustice or apathy. His sharp mind and big heart were just as essential to his identity as his spirited Tar Heel fandom.
Yet above all else, the most important thing in Peter's life was his beloved wife of 39 years, Bonnie (Kesner) Marks. She was his constant companion, confidante, and the love of his life. Together, they journeyed through every high and low, traveling the globe and enjoying countless dinner parties with family, friends, and students. Their devotion to one another was evident in every aspect of their life together, from quiet morning coffees to far-flung adventures abroad.
Peter is survived by Bonnie, his brother, Lee R. Marks (Lizl Zach), and by the children who brought additional joy to his life: Elizabeth Lizotte (Timothy), Matthew Paik (Sunha Ku), Caitlin McGrath (Sean Paley), and Lauren McCready (David). He also leaves behind his cherished grandchildren-Connor Lizotte, Charles Paley, Arden Paley, Maren McCready, David McCready, and Simone Paik-and his great-granddaughter, Thea Lizotte. Each one carries forward a piece of Peter's legacy: an inquisitive spirit, a passion for dialogue, and the courage to stand up for what they believe in.
Though Peter may no longer be with us physically, we suspect he's found a way to keep on cheering, debating, and championing the causes closest to his heart from wherever he may be. A memorial party (not service, as he requested) will be held at a later date. Donations in his memory may be made to the ACLU or to the scholarship fund at the Rhode Island UNC Carolina Club (https://giving.unc.edu/gift/ugaa) -fitting tributes to a man who never stopped fighting for justice or rooting for his Tar Heels.
Rest well, Peter. May the games be good, the debates never-ending, and the wine always well-stocked in the great beyond. We will miss you.
