Peter Terefenko Obituary

Published by Legacy on Apr. 2, 2024.
Peter Terefenko, 87, of Leesport, PA passed away on Sunday, March 31, 2024, at his residence surrounded by his loving family. Born in Reading, PA on June 16, 1936, he was a son to the late Michael Terefenko and Katherine (Jarowecki) Terefenko.
After proudly serving his country in the U.S. Navy, Peter embarked on a remarkable career spanning over 37 years, as a bull block operator at Reading Tube; until his retirement in 1999.
In his spare time, he enjoyed going fishing, hunting and cheering on the Philadelphia EAGLES.
Peter will be fondly remembered for his infectious sense of humor and quick wit. Those who knew him best often found themselves on the receiving end of his good-natured teasing, and his quick wit ensured that laughter was never far away. With Peter, you never knew what was going to come out of his mouth, but it was guaranteed to bring amusement to those around him.
You will be deeply missed, but your legacy of love and laughter will live on eternally in the hearts of all who were blessed to know you. May he rest in eternal peace.
Peter's spirit will be carried on by his daughter Michelle Terefenko; his son Scott Terefenko and his significant other Deborah Simmons; and his companion of 36 years Shirley Miller. He also leaves behind 2 granddaughters Kirsten and Alexandria and his beloved furry companion Milo to cherish his memory.
In addition to his parents, Peter was preceded in death by his son Shawn P. Terefenko; his 4 brothers Joseph, Stanley, Nicholas & Jan Terefenko and 2 sisters Rose and Sophie Vida.
The family will greet relatives and friends on Monday, April 8, 2024 from 11:00 AM to 12:30 PM at Auman's Inc. Funeral Home, 390 W. Neversink Rd., Reading, PA 19606. Followed by graveside committal with military honors at 2:00 PM at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Indiantown Gap Rd., Annville, PA 17003.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Peter's memory may be made to Humane Pennsylvania, 1729 N. 11Th St., Reading, PA 19604

My life was changed because of Pete. There was a commonality immediately as we both were born on 16 June. He took me hunting for my first time, with his son Scott. We spent years fishing and hanging out at his hunting cabin. We were all pretty young and he was mentoring all of Scott's friends whether he knew it or not. I was a pretty immature in those days with no direction. Then I decided to join the Navy, and the best advice he ever gave me, was don't get out! Stay in till you are eligible to retire. I retired as a Chief Petty Officer, Hospital Corpsman. The Navy made me who I am, and gave me the life I have today. That would have never happened if it were not for Pete. Every time I thought about leaving I heard his words. Thank you brother, and Fair Winds and Following Seas, we have the watch!

A sailor has passed away today. Peter, you are now relieved from your watch. A job well done fellow navy veteran. America thanks you for your service to our country in the defense of freedom and democracy. The carrier has turned into the wind preparing for your final departure. The plank is in place and honor guards are stationed. The final volley has sounded and taps is about to sound ending a successful career as a nation“s defender. Smooth sailing shipmate. A Navy Vietnam Veteran.
