Phillip Dale Johnston, 80, of Seymour, Iowa, passed away at his home on July 24, 2025.
Phil was born at his home near Sewal, Iowa, to Perle and Opal Johnston on December 23, 1944. He went to school at Seymour Community School, class of 1963, where he met and later married his high school sweetheart, Linda Tuttle, on April 22, 1966. To this marriage, they added four children: Rhonda, Brian, Lori, and Brent.
After high school, Phil attended barber school. He was just getting started when he married Linda. On their wedding day, Phil received his draft papers for the Army. He spent two years in the Army stationed in Germany. Upon his return, Phil eventually opened a shop in Seymour where he cut hair until his retirement in 2004. To supplement the family income, Phil was also known to dabble in horses, cattle, and cars. If asked, Phil would tell you everything is for sale. A gambler at heart, Phil never passed a casino without stopping to try his luck.
Phil's pride and joy were his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He attended hundreds of ballgames and could always be heard heckling the referees from the stands. Phil would brag on the grandkids or great-grandkids anytime he found someone to listen to his stories.
Phil loved the challenge of fixing anything. It might not always be the proper way and parts might be leftover when finished, but he rarely took on anything he couldn't fix. Several times when someone in the family couldn't figure out a problem, you would hear "call Grandpa" or "take it to Grandpa".
Phil is survived by his wife, Linda (Tuttle); his children, Rhonda (Reed) Wouters, Lori (Jon) Jewett, Brent (Melanie) Johnston; his grandchildren, Colton Wouters, Lauren (Dalton) Freeze, Justin (Jayden Miller) Jewett, Riley (Hunter) Robertson, Megan (Ethan) Wait, Allison (Blaine) DeVolld, Gracelyn Johnston, Sydney (Karlie) Snyder, Jack Snyder, Maggie Davis; great-grandchildren, Cash Robertson and Maylee Wait. Phil is also survived by his siblings, Janet (Harry) Lucas and Kenny (Sheila) Johnston; his in-laws, Richard (Karen) Tuttle, Marvin (Barb) Tuttle, Elaina Tuttle; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Phil is preceded in death by his parents, Perle and Opal Johnston; his in-laws, Maurice and Mary Tuttle; his son, Brian Johnston; his brother-in-law, Dennis Tuttle; and niece, Melinda (Lucas) McElvain.
Visitation will be held Monday, July 28, 2025 from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the Thomas Funeral Home in Corydon, Iowa. Funeral services will be Tuesday, July 29, 2025 at 10:00 AM at Thomas Funeral Home in Corydon, Iowa.
