Senior Chief Electrician's Mate Randall Keith Moon, U.S. Navy (Retired), was born on September 3, 1930 in Davenport, IA, to Richard Dewitt and Gladys Willcutt Moon. Randall peacefully passed away Monday, March 13, 2023 surrounded by family at McLeod Seacoast Hospital in Little River, SC, at the age of 92. Known as Randall, Ranny, or Randy, he was loved by all.
Randall met his wife, Ida Hamilton Moon, in Stanwood, IA, in 1939 while he was delivering milk. It was love at first sight. They were married in 1952 and spent the next 70 years creating a magnificent legacy highlighted by their service as a Navy family; impacting the community through the Masons, Shriners, American Legion and Veterans of Foreign War, and youth organizations; and the accomplishments of their four children, ten grandchildren, and twelve great grandchildren.
Randall was a dedicated father, grandfather and great-grandfather who enjoyed teaching his children and grandchildren life-skills and building memories they will never forget. They remember him helping with their school and scout projects, fixing everything when he visited their houses, working with him at the putt-putt, and attending their school or sports events.
Randall joined the Navy in 1947 and proudly served at-sea as an electrician and senior enlisted leader aboard the USS Cronin (DEC-704), USS Robert Huntington (DD-781), USS Shakori (ATE-162), and USS Casa Grande (LSD-13). He also served ashore as an instructor and in various roles enabling fleet operations. He was happiest while working alongside shipmates, and being "haze gray and underway". Randall served for 20 years and attained the rank of Senior Chief before retiring in 1968.
After retiring from the Navy, Randall moved Ida and the children to Naperville, IL and went to work for Western Electric as a maintenance electrician at their manufacturing plant in Cicero, IL, where he worked for 20 years. Despite a lengthy train commute, Randall was always home for family meals and sat in the stands with Ida to watch and cheer for their children at every school or sporting events.
After their children left, Randall and Ida began travelling to the beach for a few weeks every summer. In 1990 they had enough of the cold and moved to Ocean Isle Beach, NC. They never looked back. While Ida became involved with the local schools and the town, Randall kept busy as a ranger for Sandpiper and Angel's Trace golf courses; volunteering with the Ocean Isle Fire Department; and as a member of the South Brunswick Islands Shrine Club, Sudan Daredevils, American Legion Post 503, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7288, and Shallotte Power Squadron. That was not enough so he purchased a miniature golf course and ran it for over 20 years.
Randall was preceded in death by his son Jay Moon, his parents Richard Moon and Gladys Moon of Davenport, IA; sister Marilyn Moon of Loma Linda, CA; and brothers Richard Moon of Tipton, IA, Robert Moon of Edmond, OK, and Jerrold Moon of Yuma, AZ. He is survived by his wife, Ida Moon of Ocean Isle Beach, NC; sister, Jacqueline Cordima of Ipswich, MA; sons Randall Moon, Jr. (Marlys) of Tucson, AZ, and Timothy Moon (Robin) of Swan Point, MD; and daughter, Melanie Mayberry of Hammonton, NJ; nine grandchildren; and twelve great grandchildren.
