Reinold LaVern Eckelberg, age 98 of Montello passed away Wednesday, November 1, 2023 at Tivoli in Portage. Reinold was born in Baraboo to Louis and Ruth (Westpfahl) Eckelberg on September 17, 1925. He proudly served his country as a member of the United States Marines during World War II, he was a survivor of Iwo Jima. Reinold married Wilmetta Schendel on July 14, 1956 in Elroy; together they were blessed with four children. Wilmetta preceded Reinold in death on July 12, 2016.
Reinold enjoyed gardening, playing cards, hunting, his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Reinold is survived by his four children: Steven of Green Bay, Monica (Joseph) Zauner of Montello, Nancy (Paul) Condon of Watertown and Scott (Amy) of Slinger. He is also survived by ten grandchildren: Joseph (Melissa) Zauner, Leslie (Steve) Campbell, Tracie (Tony) Velardo, Andrew Condon, Rachel (Joe) Stommel, Richard Condon, Alyssa (Lucas) Knueppel, Caitlin (Brock) Roy, Bryan (Shelby) Eckelberg and Adam (Abby) Eckelberg. Reinold is further survived by thirteen great-grandchildren and two sisters: Lucile Hemerley and Gladys (Roger) Kaus.
Reinold is preceded in death by his parents, wife, brothers: Robert, Loren, Raymond and Charles and sisters: Ruby and Marie.
A funeral service for Reinold Eckelberg will be held on Saturday, November 4, 2023 at 11:00 AM at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Montello. Visitation will be held on Saturday from 9:00 until 10:45 AM at the church. Pastor Pete Zietlow will preside and full military honors by American Legion Post #351 of Montello will take place immediately following the service. Burial at Oak Grove Cemetery in Tomah will take place at 2:30 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to: Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary, 11831 N. Seminary Dr. Mequon, WI 53092.
