Richard Patrick Dunne Jr. passed away on Saturday, November 5, 2022 at the age of 77. He was born in Mount Vernon, NY on June 26, 1945, the son of Richard P. and Amelia L. (Schreyer) Dunne.
Richard served his country in active duty in the United States Navy in Vietnam. Following his period of active duty, he remained in the Naval Reserves retiring as a Chief Petty Officer after 27 years of service. He is a member of VFW Post 5491 and American Legion Post 1080 both in Mahopac, NY.
Richard earned a Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering and during his 30 year career at IBM Corp. he earned a Master's Degree in Education. Following retirement from IBM, he began his most rewarding career as a math teacher and department chair at Kennedy Catholic High School in Somers, NY where he taught for 12 years.
For over 40 years Rich volunteered with Cornell Cooperative Extension of Putnam County as a 4H leader, Master Gardener and member of the Board of Directors.
A longtime resident of Mahopac, NY, he enjoyed watercolor painting, woodworking and gardening. During the Christmas Season, he found great joy in playing Santa for family and friends.
Rich was a great supporter of his grandchildren and could often be found attending their sporting events and school functions. He loved spending quality time with them and just "being Grandpa".
On August 21, 1971 he married his love, Helene Hochstein in Mount Kisco, NY. In addition to Helene, he is survived by his children, Richard P. Dunne IV and his wife, Kathleen of Gansevoort, NY, Megan V. Boylan and her husband, Brendan of Hopewell Junction, NY and Michael T. Dunne and his wife, Nicole of Kent, CT; six grandchildren, Richard V (RJ), Matthew, Erin, Patrick, Natalie and Maureen; nephews Joseph, Daniel and John Hochstein and his Godson and nephew, Kenneth Dunne and Goddaughter, Elaina Dodi along with his grand nieces, Kiera and Diana. He was predeceased by his brother Kenneth Dunne.
Visiting will be held on Monday, November 7 from 4-8 pm at Joseph J. Smith Funeral Home. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, November 8 at 11:30 am at St. John the Evangelist Church in Mahopac. Private cremation services will follow.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in memory of Richard to Cornell Cooperative Extension of Putnam County, Terravest Corporate Park, 1 Geneva Rd., Brewster, NY 10509. Please specify for the Chief Dunne Memorial Garden at the Sen. Vincent Leibell Putnam County Veteran's Residence.
