Richard "Rick" Frank Fethers
February 24, 1943 – March 17, 2025
Richard "Rick" Frank Fethers passed away on March 17th, surrounded by his family. He was born on February 24, 1943, in Coaldale, PA, and grew up in Tamaqua, PA. A dedicated scholar, he earned a bachelor's degree in Chemistry from Penn State University before embarking on a long and accomplished career in the explosives industry.
At just 21, Rick began working for Atlas Powder Company, where he was quickly recognized for his leadership and was transferred to Joplin, Missouri, to manage a small team. He remained in management at Atlas Powder Company for many years until the powder line was discontinued. He was then recruited by Dyno-Nobel in Carthage, Missouri, where he worked for another 14 years before retiring. Over the course of 46 years in the explosives business, Rick's strong work ethic and leadership left a lasting impact on his colleagues and industry.
On October 26, 1968, Rick married Jane Claire Beckman, and together they built a life and raised six children. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, always placing family at the heart of everything he did.
Rick was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Grace; his sisters, Barbara (Ted Clemson) and Carolyn (Russell Finley); niece, Rebecca Kerns; and nephew, Mac Shapland. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Janey; his six children, Neal, Meg (Jason), Erin, Blair (Jody), Drew, and Blythe; and his cherished grandchildren, Miles, Flannery, Joseph, Katie, Peter, Jude, and Sunny.
A man of deep intellect and curiosity, Rick enjoyed classical music-especially Mozart-his extensive train collection started by his father, and cataloging scrapbooks of his time at Atlas Powder Company, which grew into thriving Facebook communities for former employees and friends. He found joy in morning coffee gatherings at Panera, monthly breakfasts with Atlas retirees, and cheering on his favorite teams-Penn State football, the Chiefs, and the Phillies.
Rick's devotion to his family was unparalleled. He never missed a chance to attend a play, recital, or game, even if it meant traveling hours to be there, and he proudly coached several of his children's sports teams over the years.
Rick's legacy is one of hard work, loyalty, and quiet humor. He never missed a day of work in 46 years, and he was known for his dry humor, steadfast reliability, and unwavering love for those he held dear. He will be profoundly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Peter's Outreach House in Joplin or Family Voices of MN in care of the mortuary.
The family has requested that no political attire be wore to the visitation.
A prayer service will be held on Friday, March 21, 2025 at 6:00 p.m. at Parker Mortuary with a visitation to follow. A memorial mass will be held at a later date.
Funeral arrangements are under the special care and direction of Thornhill-Dillon Mortuary.

I'd like to express my condolences to Rick's family on his passing. I only got to know Rick in his post retirement years enjoying many mornings hearing him discuss his career, politics, sports, and family. It was obvious that his family meant more to him than than any words I could express. He has been missed and will be remembered by myself and others who joined him for his morning coffee at Panera over the last fifteen or so years.
