Richard Wayne Hawes, lovingly known as Dick or simply "D," passed away surrounded by love on June 7, 2025, in Salisbury, Maryland.
Born on September 24, 1949, in Front Royal, Virginia, Dick was the son of Thomas Junior and Thelma Louise Hawes. After graduating from high school, he proudly served as a Sergeant in the U.S. Army, stationed in Korea. Following his service, he returned home and earned his college degree through the GI Bill, an achievement he cherished.
Dick built a remarkable 50-year career in the tire and automotive industry, working his way up to part ownership through dedication, integrity, and sheer hard work. He was known as someone who loved what he did, and he gave his all to everything he pursued.
A man of deep spirituality, Dick was defined by his joy, humility, and unwavering gratitude for life's simplest blessings. He was deeply present in every situation and conversation, offering his full attention and genuine care to those around him. He was often referred to as a "good, good" man, placing high value on kindness, integrity, and connection. Dick also held a deep reverence for his mother and often credited her for shaping the values he carried throughout his life.
Dick had a passion for golf, fishing, cycling, reading, and history. He loved being outdoors and was always curious about the world around him. Above all, he cherished time with his family and friends.
Dick's legacy is one of love, laughter, humility, and presence. He will be remembered for the way he showed up in life-grateful, kind, and full of heart. In his final days, Dick shared his advice to "go out with a smile and lots of friends" and that's exactly what he did.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Gina Grier; his children Pam Meding (Art), Cindy Seeney (Joe), and Tina Hawes; his stepchildren Abigail Custis (John) and Lesley Karbelnikoff (Nik); and his siblings Tommy Hawes, Bonnie Watson, Tammy Williams (Steve), Patricia Berry (Glen), and Ronnie Hawes. Dick was predeceased by his children Jeffrey Darian and Sheila Beth. He was a grandfather to 12 grandchildren and a great-grandfather to one.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Green Hill Country Club on Friday June 27th, with the service starting at 11:00AM, followed by a reception and fellowship until 2:00PM. Interment will take place at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Dick's memory to Atlantic United Methodist Church, 105 4th St., Ocean City, Maryland, 21842.
