Richard Paul Mass, known affectionately to friends and family as Dick, lived a full and admirable life before peacefully passing away on June 3, 2024, at the age of 93. Born on November 28, 1930, in South Bend, Indiana, to his late parents William Mass and Anna (Jereick) Mass, Dick remained a lifelong resident of his birthplace until his last day, exemplifying the love and dedication he had for his community.
Dick is preceded in death by his beloved wife Joan (Ames) Mass, his brother William A.O. Mass, his parents, and his dear daughter Pamela Walsh. His warm heart and joyful spirit will be profoundly missed by his surviving relatives, including his daughter Patt (Rich) Bennett of Osceola, son-in-law Joe Walsh of Granger, grandchildren Eric (Melisa) Bennett of North Liberty, Meg Bennett of Westfield, Kelly (Brad) Murray of Rensselaer, and Reid (Liz) Walsh of Niles, along with his cherished great-grandchildren Cole Bennett, Chayce Bennett, Wade Bennett, Clay Meador, Bennett Meador, Vivian Meador, Coen Murray, Gracen Murray, Levi Murray, Kaleb Walsh, and Liam Durm.
After proudly serving his country in the Marine Corps, Dick returned to South Bend where he took great pride in his work as a part owner of A.D. Mass & Sons, a Heating & Air and General Sheet Metal company which benefited from his dedication and expertise for over six decades. His professional life was marked by a strong work ethic and a commitment to quality that earned him respect and appreciation in the local business community. Dick also lent his talents to Hans Rintzsch Luggage Shop, where he applied the same dedication and skill that was a hallmark of his character.
Dick was a devout Christian and an active member of several congregations throughout his life, including Our Redeemer Evangelical Lutheran Church, St. Paul's Lutheran Church, and Hilltop Lutheran Church. His faith was a guiding light in his life, and he derived much joy and solace from participating in church activities and services.
Dick's legacy is a tapestry of love, dedication, and service, woven into the community and the lives of those he touched. His story is a testament to the power of hard work, faith, and the strength of family bonds. His memory will continue to inspire and comfort those who were fortunate enough to know him.
As we bid goodbye to Richard Paul Mass, we do so with heavy hearts that are simultaneously filled with gratitude for having known such a remarkable man. His legacy will live on in the family he cherished, the business he nurtured, and the community he held dear. Dick's story does not end with his passing; it continues in the lives of all who were blessed by his presence. Rest in peace, Dick, knowing your life was a legacy of love, and your memory will be treasured forever.
