Richard Nashel, 89, died peacefully on December 22, 2023. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Susan, three children, Jonathan (Rebecca Brittenham) of South Bend IN, Elizabeth (Stan Howard) of Missoula, MT, and Peter (Jenna Chused) of Brooklyn, NY, and six grandsons, Avery, Ethan and Jesse Howard, Samuel Nashel, and Benjamin and Sidney Nashel. His is also survived by his brother, David Nashel (Cheryl), Chapel Hill, NC. Preceding him in death was his father, Samuel, and mother, Beatrice.
He was born in Jersey City and grew up in Englewood and Teaneck, NJ. He graduated from Teaneck High School in 1952, Brown University cum laude in 1956, Columbia Law School in 1959, and then NYU with an LLM in 1960. He worked for the IRS in New York City, the Newark law firm of Pitney, Hardin, and Kipp for several years, and then he joined his father's law firm in West New York, NJ., Nashel & Nashel. He continued to practice law until his death.
Richard had many passions. This included his love of music, being an audiophile, and a wine connoisseur. He particularly liked a good cup of tea. He was a left-handed pitcher for Brown's baseball team, enjoyed watching sports, especially college football, his beloved Yankees, and tennis. Richard was also an avid gardener, fly fisherman, and bird-hunted in Montana with his beloved dogs.
He lived a long, fruitful life. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory can be made to the Jewish Braille Organization (www.jbilibrary.org) and Valley Hospice (www.valleyhospitalfoundation.org).
