Robert William Brown, Jr. passed from this life on November 10th, 2023. He was born on June 27, 1935 in Cincinnati, Ohio to his parents Robert William Brown, Sr. and Eleanor Maud Tong. This was their fourth child, first son, following three older sisters, and later a younger brother. At the age of two, the family moved to Southern California, living in many places from Compton to San Diego, to Alta Dena, to Riverside and Redlands. In 1946, after a brief return to Cincinnati, the family returned to Northern California and lived many years in Herlong, in Lassen County. Bob attended Lassen Union High School in Susanville, California, where he graduated in 1953.After high school, Bob moved to Reno, Nevada, where he studied Accounting at the University of Nevada, graduating in 1957. During his college years Bob was in the ROTC. After finishing UNR, he was sent to France by the US Army, stationed in Vitry le Francois. Living in the middle of the Champagne Provence of France was a life altering experience for him, and began his life-long love of travel. Upon his return to the US, Bob settled in Oakland, California and began his career as an auditor for the United States General Accounting Office, where he worked for most of his career. Also during this time, through a friend in his Army Reserve unit, he met the love of his life, Mary Ellen Link. They were married on June 24, 1962. Being an adventurous pair, when an opportunity to be transferred to Frankfurt Germany arose, they quickly jumped at the chance, and explored Europe for 2+ years. During that time, their first child Karen Ann was born. Bob and his family returned to California in 1966 and settled in their home in Danville, where he lived the rest of his life. Eventually a second child, Robert Hoyle was born. The family had a great life in Danville, and sparked by Bob's early love of travel, continued to explore the world on many trips. In his lifetime, Bob visited 49 states in the US and 52 countries. After retiring from the US General Accounting Office, Bob put his accounting skills to work locally and served as the Financial Audit Manager for the Bay Area Rapid Transit system (BART) for five years. Bob was a member of the San Ramon chapter of SIRs, The National Association of Retired Federal Employees, and the San Ramon Valley United Methodist Church. Bob loved cars of all kinds, especially vintage ones, country and rock-and-roll music, and gardening. Bob's great sense of humor and hearty laugh will be missed by all. Bob is survived by his wife of 61 years Mary Ellen, daughter Karen Sweet (Walter), son Robert H. Brown (Kelly) and grandchildren Avery and Will Sweet, Gemma and Brennan Brown, nine nieces and nephews, and sister-in-law Valerie Brown. He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters Doris Alf, Ruth Wessel, Marilyn Spalding, and one brother Joe Brown.A funeral service will be held at the San Ramon Valley United Methodist Church in Alamo, 902 Danville Boulevard, Alamo, CA on December 2 at 1:00 pm.
