Obituary published on Legacy.com by Brown & Sons Funeral Homes & Crematory (43rd St. Chapel) - Bradenton on Nov. 5, 2025.
With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Robert "Bob" Perry Hyatt on October 18, 2025, at the age of 92. Bob was raised on the Cherokee Indian Reservation in western North Carolina, a unique upbringing that would shape the course of his life. He was a lifelong learner and a devoted teacher with a deep passion for discovery. Bob earned degrees from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Yale University, and Duke University, where he received a master of theology degree in Christianity and culture.
A true servant leader throughout his career, Bob placed the growth and development of others above personal gain. His professional life was diverse and impactful. He served as associate chaplain at Duke University; dean of students and academic faculty member in political science and religion at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts; general manager of The Lost Colony outdoor drama in Manteo, NC; and later as an elementary school counselor and play therapist with the Nash-Rocky Mount Schools in eastern North Carolina. Most recently, Bob added "author" to his list of accomplishments, publishing his book The Tree That Loved a Little Girl.
An avid arts enthusiast, Bob found endless joy in poetry, music, painting, and the dramatic and visual arts. His love for the arts began in high school, where he served as stage manager for the outdoor drama Unto These Hills and also acted in the performance. In addition to his artistic pursuits, he was a passionate gardener who found peace and beauty in nature's rhythms.
Bob was the son of the late Samuel and Mursetis Hyatt. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 69 years, Emily Baker Hyatt, and his sister, Frances Hockman. He leaves behind a loving family to cherish his memory: his son, Russell P. Hyatt (Pam) of
Bradenton, FL; daughters, Victoria C. Sowers (Ron) of Nashville, NC, and Katherine Creekmore; sister, Theresa Cotten (Joseph) of Lenoir City, TN; granddaughter, Samantha Johnson (Jared) and great grandsons, Baker and Beckett Johnson, of Parrish, FL; grandson, Ryan P. Hyatt (Ashlynn) and great grandson, Rex P. Hyatt, of
Bradenton, FL; along with many beloved nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
A service to celebrate Bob's life will be held on Friday, November 14, 2025, at 3:00 p.m. at the Good Shepherd Episcopal Church, 231 N. Church Street, Rocky Mount, NC. The family will receive friends at the church immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Music Ministries at the Church of the Good Shepherd.
