Robert "Bob" Charles Maggio, of Slidell, Louisiana, passed away on December 24, 2024, at the age of 76. Born on September 12, 1948, in New Orleans, Louisiana, to the late Pascal "Nook" Maggio and Emelda Burmaster Maggio, Bob's life was a testament to his resilience, generosity, and zest for life.
Bob grew up in the vibrant city of New Orleans, where he attended Martin Behrman High School, graduating with the Class of 1966. His early years were filled with the rich culture and spirited community of his hometown, which would shape his love for life's many adventures.
After high school, Bob answered the call of duty and served his country with honor in the United States Marine Corps from 1968 to 1974. His time in the service instilled in him a sense of discipline and camaraderie that he carried throughout his life.
Upon returning to civilian life, Bob embarked on a successful career with South Central Bell, where he was known for his strong work ethic and amiable nature. His entrepreneurial spirit later led him to become the owner of Maggio's Import Auto Repair, a business that not only served the community but also reflected his passion for precision and excellence.
Bob's interests and hobbies were as diverse as his skills. He was an active member of SCCA and the Z Club, where he shared his love for classic and performance cars with fellow enthusiasts. His need for speed and adventure also found a home with the Gulf Coast Offshore Powerboat Club, where he enjoyed the thrill of the open water and the camaraderie of his fellow boaters.
A man of many passions, Bob also embraced the festive spirit of his native New Orleans as a member of the Krewe of Bilge Carnival group. He was also a proud member of the Mystic Krewe of the Seahorse, where he loved participating in the annual Pirate Day in the Bay celebration. Another of his other passions was dancing, and he was a member of a local Zydeco Dance Club. His involvement in these associations was not just about personal enjoyment; it was about building community and creating joy for others. One passion he took enormous pride in was volunteering at the WW II Museum, where he was instrumental in rebuilding the Packard 4M-2500 engine on the PT-305 vessel.
Bob's legacy is carried on by his loving sisters, Joan M. Inge (George) and Carol M. Freihofer. He was a beloved uncle to his nieces and nephews, Jennifer F. Steer (Keith), Cynthia I. Xochihua (Carlos), Fr. Michael Freihofer, Conrad Freihofer (Marty), and Eric Inge (Malissa). His warmth, wisdom, and humor will also be missed by a host of great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, and friends who were blessed to know him.
Bob's life was a journey of courage, service, and joy. He touched the lives of many with his generous spirit and will be remembered for his unwavering positivity and the love he had for his family and friends. As we bid farewell to Robert "Bob" Charles Maggio, we celebrate a life well-lived and a man well-loved.

I knew Bob from the autocross days in Bell Chase as well as his shop on the West Bank and BAP/GEON store on Veterans BLVD. He asked on a Sunday in Bell Chase if he could drive my A/SP 280Z. My daughter then 4 or 5 was with me, Bob drove the car shaving many seconds off my lap time which was decent enough for my skill level. He pulled back into the parking area told me, "the car is well built and quick, you need a bit more practice to be really fast in A/SP, my daughter looked at me and said "and lose weight, you're fat Daddy", Bob about fell out laughing.
I heard he totaled his 240z @ Chimney Rock hurting himself as well, many years later I actually saw him again when he rented the 1st shop of a close friend near Delgado, we'd been out on the Catamaran @ the Prop Stop and were hosing it down in another friends brick company nearby, Bob and his girlfriend walked up when they heard the engines being flushed, shortly after that I heard he had moved to Slidell, bought a sport boat but was no longer racing cars nor building them.
Bob was always decent friend, in the autocross and Z Club he was known as "Magic" because of his car driving skill, smooth as glass and very fast.
I did not know he had passed until today having left the state for the Georgia coast in 94. He was a good friend, he'll be missed by many.
