NORTH ATTLEBORO – Robert "Bob" Vandal Sr., age 92, of
North Attleboro, MA, passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 12, 2025, after a period of declining health. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 49 years, Marylou (Jordan) Vandal, on July 20,2007.
A true North Attleboro townie Bob was born on River Street, grew up on Fisher Street, ran his business Pete's Barber Shop with his brother Pete for over 50 years on North Washington Street, had his home of 65+ years on Westside Ave and passed away at Madonna Manor on North Washington Street. His only time living out of his 2-mile radius was when he entered the Navy in 1951 and served on the USS Baltimore until honorably discharged in 1955. His ship represented the USA at Queen Elizabeth's Coronation in 1953.
Bob worked alongside his brother Pete at Pete's Barbershop until Pete's death in 2000 and then by himself until his well-deserved retirement in 2004. Pete and Bob enjoyed dailyscratch tickets, with any winnings split, for as long as they worked side by side. Throughout the years, Bob was a devoted member of the Sacred Heart Parish, member of the Holy Name Society, served on various parish councils and, in his later years, was coordinator of the collectors at the 4 o'clock mass. He was a decades-long member of the Knights of Columbus, Council 330 2-time Grand Knight, Knight of the Year, Community Service Award, ran many of the K of C parties coordinating the food with a good eye for how much food was needed so there was no waste his favorite saying on that was "we're feeding them, not fattening them." He also was a talented member of the bowling leagues for the Knights and the Holy Name and one time even scored a perfect 300!
Family was important to Bob. He settled with Marylou on Westside Ave in 1958 and raised their 3 children there. He was an excellent cook and a big fan of the clean as you go philosophy. His Pot Roast was legendary as were his BLTs, grilled cheeses, hamburgers with a grilled bun, clams casino and baked stuffed shrimp. We were a hot breakfast family growing up with dad making the best crepes! Bob coached his son's Little League team growing up and attended any sport or academic event that his kids and later grandkids were in. He was a big fan of the New England Patriots and could always be seen in his Patriots hat and T-shirt.
Bob is survived by his 2 daughters: Donna Dunn (Kevin) of Attleboro Falls, MA and Debbie Clark of Rosharon, TX and 6 grandchildren: Maggie Wagner (Shawn) of Dublin, OH; JJ Dunn (Veronica) of Melbourne, Australia; Gabrielle Giangregorio(Jake) of N. Attleboro; Molly Dunn of Miami, FL; Liam Clark & Kiera Clark, both from TX. He also leaves his beloved cat Blizzard. He was predeceased by his son Rob in 2019.
Bob was lucky enough to find love a second time around with Irene Tyler of North Attleboro. Irene has been his partner in crime for over the past 17 years. They have enjoyed trips to Las Vegas, Aruba, the casinos, out to dinner at some of his favorite haunts like Don's Diner ("one French toast & bacon"), Bliss Brothers ("coffee with 2 creams, 2 sugars"), Rocky Point for Clam Cakes and the Empire Buffet he was truly blessed to have her in his life. They were a great team. The Tyler family warmly embraced him and welcomed him in and he enjoyed their Tyler Family Christmas Party and Taco Nights, where everyone else ate tacos and Maureen made Bob something else! He will be missed by: Muriel Tyler (Ed), David, Shelly & Phil Bonomo and Michael & Maureen Tyler, and their children.
He was preceded in death by his wife Marylou Vandal, his parents George & Angeline Vandal, his siblings George (Francie), Irene and Pete; his son in law John Clark; his son Robert Vandal Jr.
His funeral, to which relatives and friends are most kindly invited to attend, will be held on Tuesday, January 21, 2025, beginning with a time for visitation from 9:30 to 11:00 AM in Sacred Heart Church, 58 Church Street, North Attleboro. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in his honor by the Reverend David A. Costa in the church beginning at 11:00 AM. Interment will follow in Saint Mary's Cemetery, Towne Street, Attleboro Falls.
Arrangements are under the care and direction of the Sperry-McHoul-Pichi Funeral Home,
North Attleboro, MA.
Bob's family wishes to give special thanks to his neighbors Mike and Judy Rayburg, for their constant support over the past 30 years, enabling Bob to remain in his home for as long as he did. They would also like to thank the staff at Madonna Manor, especially Diane Bouthilette and fellow French speaking CNA Nichelle for their attention to Bob.
In lieu of flowers, Bob's family encourages memorial donations to Beacon Hospice because without the great care and guidance by Molly and Sabrina over the past 18 months, this journey would have been much more difficult. They do the work of angels and with such grace. Donations must be payable to "Amedisys Foundation" and mailed to the following address: Amedisys, Inc.
