Robert J. Wilson, 98 of Township of Washington, NJ passed away peacefully at home on September 21, 2024.
Devoted husband of 67 years to Millie and loving father to Cathy and Lori.
Born in Jersey City and raised in Maywood, NJ, the son of William and Philomena settled in the Township of Washington to raise his family.
Upon graduation from Bogota High School in 1944, he was drafted by the army and sent overseas to fight in WWII. He joined up with the 10th Mountain Division and was sent to Italy as reinforcement for the Po Valley conflict. Upon arriving in Naples, Bob was sent to Caserta and then northward where he was stationed until the end of the war.
He spent a year at college where he studied agriculture and animal husbandry, but left to follow in his father's footsteps and became a journeyman in the newspaper trade. He graduated to become a stereotyper and worked for all the major newspapers in the tri-state area eventually retiring from the New York Times.
Bob met Millie at four years old but didn't start dating her until after the war. At the urging of a classmate, Millie invited her childhood friend, Bob Wilson, as her date to the Sadie Hawkins Dance resulting in a marriage, Bob would recall as a "match made in Heaven".
Bob will be remembered for his quiet, dependable and detailed manner. He enjoyed woodworking and took great pride in his home. His neighbors still recount how they watched his progress on the completion of a cobblestone driveway he did alone. One of his greatest accomplishments was the building of their summer home in upstate Maine. He and Millie framed and built Loon Lodge, a place where they spent many happy summers since the early 1970's. Up until 93 years of age, they were still enjoying their secluded paradise.
Predeceased by his dear wife, Millie and daughter Cathy, he is survived by his daughter Lori and her husband, Joseph Russo, two grandsons, Joseph and his wife Alexandra, Christopher and his wife Samantha, and two darling great-granddaughters, Emma and Lily.
Though his wonderful, long journey has come to an end, we wish not to say "good bye" but good night to our Dear Bob.
