Roger J. Back, age 84, of Walkerton, Indiana, formerly of Salyersville, Kentucky, passed away peacefully on Monday, September 29, 2025, just one day shy of his 85th birthday. He was born on September 30, 1940, in Salyersville, Kentucky to the late Sewell and Rosie (White) Back. Roger grew up in McGoffin County before moving to Indiana, where he made his home and built a life with his family. On November 19, 1976, he married the love of his life, Joan (Wedding) Back, in Koontz Lake, Indiana. Roger worked as a supervisor in the aerospace industry, where he was known for his dedication and leadership. He was also a proud member of the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels. He attended Grovetown High School and graduated from John Glenn High School with the Class of 1982. In his free time, Roger enjoyed camping with his family at Broken Arrow Campground, where he made many lifelong friends and was known for his talent in horseshoe pitching. He was a fierce competitor, winning numerous horseshoe tournaments over the years, and took great joy in the camaraderie the game brought him. Above all, Roger was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. His family was his greatest pride and joy. Roger is survived by his loving wife of nearly 49 years, Joan; three sons, Rodney (Mary-Ann) Back, Todd (Juel) Back, and Jeff Ernsberger; five grandchildren, Desiree (Zach) Godsey, Bailey (Jae) Back, Brooke (Randy) Ross, Breanna (Corey) Sainato, and Lee Back; and five great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Evelyn Meyers, and sister-in-law, Nancy Back. He was preceded in death by his parents; four sisters, Carrie Mann, Opal Owens, Shirley Jones, and Esther Back; and five brothers, Glaster, Costillo, Ollie, Angelo, and Jollie Back. A private Celebration of Life service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Asara Care Hospice in Valparaiso, Indiana in honor of Roger's life and memory. The family wishes to extend a special thank you to Dawn Baum, Roger's hospice nurse, for her extraordinary care, kindness, and support to Roger and his loved ones. Her compassion will never be forgotten. Roger will be remembered for his hardworking spirit, his love of family, and the many friendships he made throughout his life. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
