Roger Dean Crocker, a devoted father, decorated military veteran, public servant, and esteemed judo instructor, passed away on June 18, 2025, at the age of 78.
Born in November 1946, Roger was the beloved son of Hyla and Anna (Bohmann) Crocker. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Daryl Crocker.
Roger is survived by his two sons, Dean Crocker (Kim) of Lake Mykee, Missouri, and Jacob Crocker of Tampa, Florida. He leaves behind a legacy of integrity, service, and mentorship that has touched countless lives both in his community and across the world.
Roger dedicated much of his professional life to public service, working for the State of Missouri in both the Department of Health and the Department of Economic Development. His academic achievements included a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and Economics, and a Master of Business Administration in Management, both from Lincoln University in Jefferson City. He also pursued studies at the University of Central Missouri and the University of Missouri, ever committed to lifelong learning.
A proud and honorable veteran, Roger's military journey began with active duty in Vietnam. After his honorable discharge, he continued his service with the Army Reserves in Jefferson City, Missouri. In 1988, he moved to Tampa, Florida, where he served with distinction in Military Intelligence at the United States Central Command. He was called to active duty in support of Operation Desert Storm, Operation Enduring Freedom, and Operation Iraqi Freedom. Roger retired in 2007 as a Sergeant Major, concluding more than 28 years of dedicated service to his country. His military career was marked by numerous awards and decorations in recognition of his leadership, valor, and steadfast commitment.
Beyond his military and professional endeavors, Roger had a lifelong passion for the martial art of judo. He began his journey in 1973 at the Jefferson City YMCA, training under Daniel Russell and later Randol Russell. Achieving the rank of 5th degree black belt, Sensei Crocker was a respected and influential instructor. He served as head judo instructor at the Jefferson City YMCA from 1997 to 2001 and simultaneously developed the Jefferson City Parks and Recreation Judo Program. Upon relocating to Florida, he continued to share his expertise and love for the sport, teaching in various programs up until his passing.
Roger Dean Crocker will be remembered for his discipline, kindness, mentorship, and unyielding sense of duty. His strength of character and dedication to service enriched the lives of all who knew him. He will be deeply missed.
Services will be held on Friday June 27th at Slater-Millard Funeral Home in Holts Summit. Visitation will be 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM with services beginning at 1:00. Graveside services will be after at Hawthorn Memorial Gardens in Jefferson City, MO.
In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to the VA Hospital in Columbia or a local judo program in Roger's memory.
