Roger E. DeVore, 88, of Columbus, passed from this life at 6:54 a.m. Saturday, November 9, 2024, at Our Hospice of South Central Indiana Inpatient Facility.
Mr. DeVore was born July 20, 1936, in Franklin, Indiana, the son of Benton Uriah and Julia Ann Powell DeVore.
Roger married Ann Grahame August 17, 1958.
He is survived by his wife Ann of 66 years; daughters, Kimberly Ann (Robert) Earl of Brown County and Sarah Evelyn (Perry) Rice of Woodbury, Minnesota; grandchildren, Reagan Rice and Piper Rice both of Woodbury, MN, Kirby Rice of CA and Afton and Chris Sparks both of Muncie, IN; a great-grandson, Alex Scheible; and half-sisters, Debbye (John) Scarborough of Stuart, FL, Betsye (Guy) Stevens of Sebastian, FL and Cathye (Bill) Motta of Vero Beach, FL.
Roger resided in Vero Beach, Florida from 1946 to 1964; he was a graduate of Vero Beach High School where he was a four sport athlete and was captain of the football and basketball teams.
He received a Bachelor of Arts in math-physics from Franklin College and held various office positions, including President of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity in 1956, Chi Beta Phi Honorary, varsity football and baseball; all Hoosier College Conference Center Fielder and Alumni Council.
He received a second Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from the University of Florida where he was intramural sports manager for the School of Civil Engineering and a charter life member of the National Alumni Association.
They moved to Columbus in 1964; Roger severed as the City Engineer from 1964 to 1971, Board of Public Works and Safety, City Plan Commission, appointed by the Governor to the Indiana Local Road and Street Board, President of City Engineers Association of Indiana, Columbus Utility Service Board Vice President, Purdue University Road School Planning Committee, Columbus Olympians softball team state champions and Detroit regional champions, Math Mentor at Richards Elementary School, Professional Engineer with registrations in Indiana, Florida, Ohio and Kentucky, Design Engineer on roadway projects in 30 Indiana counties and several highway projects in Indiana and roadway projects in Columbus and was a long time member and President of The Board of Trustees of the First United Methodist Church.
He was a member of Westside Community Church and a past member of Harrison Lake Country Club and Timbergate Golf Club.
He enjoyed playing golf with his wife Ann and long time friends and was an avid sports fan and a loyal supporter of all Gator Sports teams at the University of Florida.
A celebration of life service will be held at 12:00 p.m. Thursday at Westside Community Church with Dennis W. Aud and Robert Vester officiating.
Family and friends may gather for a time of visitation from 10:00 a.m. to time of service at the church.
His cremated remains will be laid to rest at 12:00 p.m. Friday at Parkview Cemetery in Alexandria, Indiana.
Memorial contributions may be made to Westside Community Church Building Fund or Our Hospice of South Central Indiana.
