Sadly the family of Roland L. Smth, annonces his passing at home August 7, 2025. He is now with his Lord and Savior.
Roland was born June 5,1946 the son of Cassius and Hazel(Scribner)Smith of Brandon, Vt. He was raised in Brandon, graduated from Otter Valley Union High School with the class of 1964.
He was known as Roland, Buddy and Papa.
After graduating high school, he worked for Bob and Sally Wood of Woods Market Garden in Brandon for many years. In November of 1965 he enlisted in the U.S. Army serving in the Vietnam War until 1968 as a Specialist 5, when he was wounded in a tank where he was the driver and/ or Gunner, earning a Purple Heart Medal. Later returning to work at Woods Market Garden.
On October 10,1970 he married his best friend, Yvonne (Bonnie) (Gee) Smith. Together they built their first home on Lead Mine Mountain in North Chittenden, Vt., then later built their second and final home. In November of 1980 their son Roland E. was born. Together they made their home in North Chittenden for almost 55 years where they raised their son Roland(Skip).
He was a very good carpenter, working winters with Bob and Dick Wood, building Agway pole barns. He also worked many years with Wendell Smith Jr. building Northern Homes.
He was active in his community, serving as lister for the Town of Chittenden for 3 years and was a member of the North Chittenden Grange Hall Committee.
Roland worked for the Disney Store through its entire duration at the Diamond Run Mall in Rutland Town. His last place of employment was working in the Maintenance Dept at the Diamond Run Mall.
Roland was very dedicated to his family and their many pets over the years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, was avid at crossword puzzles and reading mystery novels.
He Is survived by his wife Yvonne(Bonnie)and his son Roland(Skip),several cousins, nieces and nephews.
Predeceased by his mother and father, his only sibling, sister Annie Griffin, his infant son Benard and infant daughter Linda Jean.
The family wishes to thank all of the emergency responders and everyone who had them in their thoughts and prayers.
There will not be any calling hours or funeral services at Rolands request.
Memorial contributions can be made to the VFW, Wounded Warriors, Paralyzed Veterans or Rutland County Humane Society.
