Roland Wicker Obituary

Mr. Wicker was born on November 23, 1952 in Wurzburg, Germany, the son of Willie Grayden and Helmtrud Philomena Wicker. Being a military family, they moved around many times over the years before settling in Columbus in 1969. Mr. Wicker was a member of the first graduating class at Kendrick High School in 1970. He then served his country honorably as a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne Division of the U.S. Army. Following his military service, he earned a nursing license and embarked on an over twenty-five year career as a Registered Nurse in critical care. He worked at St. Francis Hospital, The Columbus Medical Center, and Hughston Clinic over the years. He was of the Catholic faith. Mr. Wicker was an avid gardener, who loved to spend time outdoors as much as he could. He was also a wonderful cook, with his specialities being baking bread from scratch and cooking on his smoker. He loved music, particularly old country, classic rock, and blues. Above all, Mr. Wicker was a true patriot who loved his family and his country. His most treasured memories were spending time with and talking to his family. He is preceded in death by his parents and siblings, William Wicker and Toni Mahoney.
He is survived by his loving wife of forty-one years, Janice Wicker of Pine Mountain; children, Rachel (Will) Scarborough of Hamilton, Roland A. Wicker of Jacksonville, FL, and Crystal Childs; grandchildren, Brad Holmes, Dustin (Bailey) Holmes, Gracie Childs, Joscelyn Wicker, Isaac Scarborough and Vivian Scarborough; and great-grandchildren, Paisley Holmes and Posie Holmes.
A Funeral Mass will be conducted at 11:00 AM on Friday, September 26, 2025 at Christ the King Catholic Church in Pine Mountain. Inurnment will follow in the Pine Mountain Cemetery.
Flowers will be accepted, or those wishing may make memorial contributions to the City of Hope Cancer Treatment Center of Atlanta.
