Whenever I saw my aunt Roe, I made sure to greet her with the phrase: "Bond, Mrs. James Bond." That was our greeting for a half-century. It began the way most things begin, with laughter. She was driving my cousin Jerry (her son), and I back from the movie theater - in Suffolk County, Long Island - when she hit the gas pedal with the perfect balance of force and timing. Her skills allowed us to deftly outmaneuver two other drivers, and capture the lead spot onto the entry ramp of the highway. Other than the 007 movies, I had never actually witnessed such a feat. That's when I leaned forward from the back seat, where my cousin and I had been staring at each other wide-eyed, and blurted out the phrase: "Bond, Mrs. James Bond." She loved it, and it stuck. The three of us laughed the entire drive back home. Like her driving, it is hard to imagine that she is gone, she never seemed the type who would slow down; or stop. Like the birds chirping in the soft light of dawn, she was a constant. Now, it is up to those who loved her - and those whom she loved - to carry her energy and spirit and laughter forward. Just like diamonds, my aunt Roe is forever.
