With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Ruth Noeline (Shoup) Yarman, 86, who passed away peacefully in her sleep the morning of October 28, 2024 at the Apostolic Village Nursing Home in Rittman, OH.
Known for her friendliness, strong faith, and endless love of Smith Dairy ice cream, she cherished her role as a mother, grandmother and friend above all else. She leaves behind a legacy of kindness, warmth, and cherished memories, and will be deeply missed by her family and friends.
Ruth was the eldest of six, born June 3, 1938 in Wadsworth, Ohio to Ira and Grace (Schmid) Shoup. After graduating from Wadsworth High School in 1956, she married Larry E. Yarman on May 16, 1959. They built and resided in their one and only home on Mennonite Road and raised their three children there. She worked alongside her husband on his milk route and later earned the title "Ice cream Lady" selling bargain ice cream at Smith Dairy. She was the granddaughter of John J. Schmid who, along with his brother Peter, started Smith Dairy. After the sudden passing of her husband Larry, Ruth spent much of her time creating friends from strangers along her many journeys; whether it was driving across the country to Colorado, or on one of her several trips to Europe and Israel, or just going to the Post Office, there was not a stranger she wouldn't talk to.
A woman of deep faith, Ruth's connection to the church, particularly Smithville Mennonite Church, was an important part of her life. Her love of singing, especially old hymns, speaks to the joy and comfort she found in her faith and music throughout her life. She also enjoyed working puzzles and scrapbooking, and often made blankets and homemade cards for her family and friends.
In addition to her husband and parents, Ruth is preceded in death by her three brothers Larry, Don, and Ken Shoup, and her sister Lois Benham.
Surviving are her three children, Jeffrey (Beth Cender) Yarman of Fairbanks, AK, Darol (Carol) Yarman of Joshua, TX, and Penny Yarman of Goshen, IN, three grandchildren, Keely (Ryan) Allen of Reno, NV, Kate (Chris) Michler of Joshua, TX, and Cara Yarman of Omaha, NE, two great-grandchildren, Adelle and Maxx, a sister, Pam Huebner, two sisters-in-law, Jan Shoup and Mary Shoup, as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and a town full of friends.
A private burial will take place at Maple Hill Mennonite Cemetery the morning of Saturday November 9, 2024.
A memorial service will follow at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, November 9 at Smithville Mennonite Church with Pastor Todd Martin officiating.
Friends may call at the church from 9:30 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, November 9. All are invited to stay for more visiting and ice cream after the service. "There are no strangers here; only friends you haven't met yet."
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Smithville Mennonite Church or Medina County Chorus.
