Salvatore J. Scardino, 86, of Jackson, NJ, known for his big heart and his devotion to his family, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on January 19, 2025.
Born in Niagara Falls, NY, Sal moved with his family to Hoboken, NJ at an early age before growing up in South Beach, Staten Island. He graduated from McKee High School, where he was rated as the #3 pitcher in the tri-state area.
Sal raised his family in Dongan Hills, Staten Island, where he co-owned and operated the Snack House, a cherished family business. Sal was a skilled carpenter who built homes before founding Concord Distributors, his soda business, where he earned the affectionate nickname "Sally Yoo-hoo." He moved to Freehold, NJ, in 1994 where he helped raise his grandchildren and then moved to Jackson, NJ in 2004 where he spent his golden years.
Known for his humor, zest for life, and entrepreneurial spirit, Sal always had a new joke, story, or business idea to share. He brought joy and inspiration to family when leading his famous Paint n Sip classes, where his creativity, artistic talents, and humor shone brightly. He was an avid fan of the Yankees, Knicks, Rangers, Giants, Mets, and a supporter of all NY sports teams. Sal also enjoyed fishing, bowling, golfing, photography, watching old Western movies, playing cards, painting, and dancing and laughing with his partner Lydia.
Salvatore was predeceased by his parents, Anthony and Margaret; sister, Angela; his beloved wife of 55 years, Frances; his son, Anthony; daughter-in-law, Alice; and brother-in-law, Michael.
He is survived by his loving partner, Lydia Reynolds; daughter, Donna Tumminia (Andrew); son, Joseph Scardino (Joanne); sister, Natalie DeRuvo; brother, Paul Scardino (Mary Ann); grandchildren, James Tumminia, Robert Tumminia, Michael Tumminia, Samantha Scardino, Joseph Scardino, Jennifer Gonzalez, and Allison Komal; great-grandchildren, Sophia and Ravi; and many extended family members, including his brother-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins, and cherished friends.
Family and friends are invited to attend a visitation on Thursday, January 23, 2025, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Orender Family Home for Funerals, 2643 Old Bridge Road, Manasquan, NJ 08736.
