Sandra Pearson Smith died peacefully at her home in Raleigh supported by her family on June 24, 2025 after an inspiring and valiant battle with cancer.
Born on October 19, 1941, Sandra was the daughter of William Walter Pearson and Emily Alexander Pearson. Sandra was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Charles H. Smith Jr. and her son, Charles Harrison Smith III. She is survived by her daughter, Sandee Smith Story; son-in-law, George Edward Story; her cherished grandsons, George Edward Story Jr, and his wife, Amy Lai; and Dr. William Andrew (Stavri) Story.
Sandra embraced life, touching countless individuals while forming deep and lasting relationships. With a radiant personality, she was continuously forming new acquaintances with her neighbors, people in the community, and on her trips around the world. She immensely enjoyed the time spent with her many friends and family and was loved by all. Sandra was endowed with an adventurous spirit and enjoyed trying new experiences while on her many travels, a passion she shared with her late husband, Charles. She loved exploring exotic locations and never turned away from a new adventure, whether riding elephants, sampling local cuisine or hopping on a zip line, Sandra was the first to volunteer. With a true gift of hospitality, she loved entertaining, hosting others at home, at the beach or lending a hand where needed, and was always the life of any gathering.
Sandra also had a strong calling for mission support, both through her church and various missionary organizations. She could be counted on to be there for others in time of need, providing support and care. After the unexpected loss of her son, Sandra developed a calling for grief ministries, organizing and supporting various programs to help others deal with their grief journey. She profoundly affected many lives in a positive and loving way and will be deeply missed by all those who were blessed to know her.
A service to celebrate her life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 28th at Christ Episcopal Church, 120 E. Edenton Street followed by a reception in the fellowship hall. A graveside service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 29th at the Old Trinity Episcopal Cemetery in Scotland Neck, NC.
The family thanks all her wonderful friends and extended family members who provided companionship and support during Sandra's fight with cancer. A special thanks as well to her amazing caregiving team and the wonderful staff at Duke Hospice who enabled her to remain comfortable and well-cared for in her home.
