Sandra Matheny Obituary
Sandra Williams Matheny, 85, passed away peacefully on October 13, 2024, after enjoying one too many chocolate milkshakes garnished by the golden arches. Born on March 10, 1939, in Portsmouth, Virginia, she was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and a self-proclaimed #1 fan of Andrea Bocelli. She leaves behind a very dysfunctional family and a storage room full of stuff, both of which she was immensely proud of.
Sandra's home was a symphony of speaker phone calls, loudly yelling "JODI!", soap opera reruns, and occasional snores from her Victorian era couch. Her piano sat close by, serving not only as an instrument, but as a portal that teleported her grandchildren and great grandchildren to Sandra's favorite Disney moments, Broadway musicals, and classic movie soundtracks.
Sandra's life was composed of not just well-worn sheet music, but a treasure trove of memories. She fondly spoke of her time as a young girl tap dancing for the USO, her years of service to the Huyck Corporation, and her hours spent working at the most magical place of all, Disney World. She often told the story of flying with Ronald Reagan to see him throw the first pitch at a game honoring the troops. Her son was in the Air Force, and of that she was especially proud.
Sandra's heart yearned for her beloved Joe, her partner since May 10, 1969. For 28 years, they loved fiercely until Joe's departure. Her family finds peace knowing they're together again, especially since Sandra's countdown to this moment began when she turned 73. Her devotion to Joe was clear to anyone who knew her-she spoke of their reunion with a mix of humor and heartfelt longing, ensuring everyone was ready for the day she'd be with him again.
Sandra is survived by her loving children, Paul and Jodi. They, along with her cherished grandchildren-Ashley, Christopher, Zachary, Sarah, Emily, Kayla, and Rebecca-and her seven great-grandchildren, will carry forward the joy, warmth, and laughter she brought into their lives. Her family was her greatest love, and her spirit will continue to shine through them.
A celebration of Sandra's life will be held on October 19 at a private ceremony hosted by her grandchildren. Afterward, the family will gather for chocolate milkshakes and foods with just the right amount of salt-Sandra's favorite. Flowers and memorial donations may be sent to Raleigh Durham Cremation & Funeral Service.
