Sandra Janelle Weis, 77, of Jefferson City, passed away at home on December 2, 2024. She was born to Loren and Nona Hedstrom on September 17, 1947, in Concordia, Kansas. She was baptized and confirmed at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Norway, Kansas. She graduated from Norway grade school in Norway, Kansas, and went to Courtland high school, Courtland, Kansas, graduating in 1965. She attended Kansas Wesleyan University, Salina, Kansas, as part of Asbury School of Nursing.
Sandy, a nickname given by her Ames grandparents, grew up in a small Kansas town and spent a lot of time on her grandparent's farm. She used to play "air piano" on the arm of the sofa at a young age. Her mother took notice and put her in piano lessons with Jan Melhaus. She had 36 lessons and a few lessons for the organ. At the age of 11, she accompanied the Junior Choir at church and later was the assistant organist. She accompanied her parents as they sang for different occasions. And later played for the high school Boys Glee, Girls Glee, and Mixed Chorus. Music was the love of her life.
Sandy met the other love of her life in 1966 and married Roger Alan Weis on April 22, 1967. Of this union, two children were born, Christopher Anders Weis on September 17, 1971, and Nathan Ehren Weis on July 22, 1974.
Sandy worked as a nursing assistant at Salina Clinic in Salina, Kansas, and Midwest Orthopedic Group after moving to Kansas City, Missouri in 1970. The family moved to Jefferson City, Missouri in 1979 due to Roger's job change. On any given weekend, one could find Sandy in the stands watching her sons play soccer on the run track. She also enjoyed many of her son's piano recitals. Her children were the center of her life.
One could always find this family in Sunday school and church for worship on Sunday mornings. They were a constant presence when work or programs needed to be done. In 2006, Sandy became the Christian Education Director at Grace Episcopal Church. She felt honored to be able to bring a new curriculum for Sunday school to Grace called "Godly Play". She served in this position for fourteen years. She also helped with a program for nursing homes until Covid 19 hit in 2019. She was privileged to play special music on the piano at church. She remained a member of Grace Episcopal Church.
Survivors include her husband, Roger; her mother, Nona Ames Hedstrom; her sons, The Rev. Christopher (Heather) Weis and Nathan (Andrea) Weis; her grandchildren, Avery Camille Weis, Stella Elise Anders Weis, Ethan Davis Weis, and Katelyn Nicole Weis; her brothers, The Rev. Dr. L. Keith Hedstrom (Eileen) and Lee Hedstrom (Estelle); her brother-in-law, Ron Weis (Glenna) Tracy, Laura, and Max; her two uncles, Dean Hedstrom and Ron Ames; her aunt, Marilyn Ames; and her nieces, nephews, and many cousins and friends.
Departed include her father, Loren Hedstrom; her grandparents, George and Ruth Bockoven Ames and Axel and Jennie Gustafson Hedstrom; her aunts, Gerry Johnson (Milton, Royal), Eileen Combs (Lee), Irma Brewer (Dean), Fern Ames, Lillian Bergstrom (Ivan); her nephews, Anders and Balin; her niece, Caroline Kaufmann; and her in-laws, Francis and Emma Weis.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests monetary donations to Grace Episcopal Church - Mission and Outreach: https://onrealm.org/gracechurchjc/-/form/give/now.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, December 14, 2024 starting at 10:00 a.m. at the Grace Episcopal Church officiated by Father Bill Nesbit. Inurnment will follow at Riverview Cemetery.
