a beloved professor at the Community College of Rhode Island, passed away peacefully on November 17, 2025, at the age of 93. Born on August 29, 1932, in Johnston, Rhode Island, Santo's life was characterized by a profound commitment to education, service, and family.
Santo achieved remarkable academic success, earning his bachelor’s degree from Providence College, followed by two master’s degrees, from New York University and from Columbia University. He completed his educational journey with a Doctorate from Boston College. His passion for teaching and learning inspired countless students throughout his career.
In addition to his dedication to education, Santo honorably served in the United States Navy, where he developed a strong sense of duty and resilience that would carry throughout his life. A celebrated member of the academic community, he was also involved with Delta Epsilon Sigma and held the position of Past President of the Rhode Island Council of Teachers of English.
Beyond his professional achievements, Santo cherished his time spent with family. He is survived by his cherished nieces, MaryBeth Bennett, Jana Gillette, and Judi Cavalieri, as well as 14 great-nieces and great-nephews, and 6 great-great-nieces and great-nephews. His legacy of love and wisdom will continue to shine through them.
Santo was predeceased by his parents, Angelo and Elizabeth (Casey) Riccitelli, and his siblings: Mary B. Capperalli, Virginia Paesano, Angela Riccitelli, Elizabeth Riccitelli, Louis Riccitelli, and Helen Riccitelli. He also mourned the loss of his nephew, Louis A. Riccitelli, Jr.
In his leisure time, Santo enjoyed traveling, gardening, and experiencing the magic of Broadway shows and musicals. These interests enriched his life and fostered connections with others who shared his passions.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend his Mass of Christian Burial on Tuesday, November 25, 2025, at 10am in St. Robert Bellarmine Church, 1804 Atwood Avenue, Johnston. Burial with Military Honors will follow in St. Ann Cemetery, Cranston. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, 301 St. Jude’s Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
