Sara Jane Turbin, age 66, of Wisconsin Rapids, WI entered eternal rest peacefully in her sleep on August 19, 2024. Born January 5, 1958, Sara was the youngest of five children born to Eldred and Edna Appel. Sara was a 1976 graduate of Lincoln High School and then graduated from St. Joseph's Nursing School in Marshfield, WI, as a Registered Nurse. Sara married her high school sweetheart, Patrick on June 30, 1979. Together they lovingly raised four daughters.
Visitation will be Thursday, August 22, 2024, from 4:00-7:00 PM at Herman-Taylor Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 2201 Chestnut Street, Wisconsin Rapids, WI. A Wisconsin Nurses Honor Guard ceremony will be held at 6:45 PM during the visitation at the funeral home. On Friday, August 23, 2024, visitation will be from 10:00-11:00 AM, and service at 11:00 AM, Immanual Lutheran Mission Center, 1501 24th Street, Wisconsin Rapids, WI.
She worked her entire nursing career as a labor and delivery nurse at Riverview/Aspirus Hospital up until her retirement in 2019. She was passionate about her profession, becoming a memorable staff member for many of her patients during their deliveries. As a leader of the Family Birthplace's Walk to Remember program, Sara helped nurture families who experienced infant loss, and lovingly provided families with hand sewn baby gowns.
Upon retirement, Sara enjoyed being an active member of service groups at Immanuel Lutheran Church including Evening Guild, quilting, and visiting with homebound members. She enjoyed working on projects in her sewing room, playing the piano, conversing with neighbors, biking around the hood, baking in the kitchen, and digging around in her flower gardens. Her skill as a nurse translated to plants as she could rescue anything looking "sickly" and bring it back to life. Her greatest joy was welcoming her daughters' families and especially her 7 grandchildren home for visits. Grandma's house was full of laughter, treasures, toys, and special treats. She was an amazing Grandmother, always making time to engage in play, read books, or enroll special helpers in the kitchen or sewing projects.
Sara will always be remembered for her kind and compassionate soul, her constant motherly nurturing, and her incessant drive to help and serve others in all aspects of life. Her legacy will live on through those she has impacted with her love in action.
Sara is preceded in death by her parents Eldred and Edna Appel, sister Sue Anne Adams, brother-in-law John Turbin, and brother-in-law Timothy Turbin.
Sara is survived by her husband Patrick, daughters Michelle (Jay) Hartjes of Junction City, Molly (Mark) Ciardelli of Appleton, Melissa (Paco) Sanchez of Madison, and Megan Turbin (Zach Johnson) of Madison, grandchildren Adelena, Hobsen, Owen, Abrietta, Carson, Enzo, and Mia, siblings Tom (Dottie) Appel, Kathleen (Ben) Pease, James (Cindee) Appel, brother in law Don Adams, brother in law Jim (Judy) Turbin, brother in law Jere (Sue) Turbin, sister in law Cynde Turbin, sister in law Deb Turbin, countless nieces, nephews, nursing coworkers, amazing supportive neighbors, extended family, and friends.
