With profound sadness yet hearts full of gratitude for a life so beautifully lived, the family of Sarah Manita Berrong announces her peaceful passing on January 28, 2025, at the extraordinary age of 101. While we mourn her absence, we also rejoice in the knowledge that her remarkable journey has now given way to the eternal embrace of Heaven. Born on January 3, 1924, Manita was a beacon of grace, faith, and resilience.

She was preceded in death by her devoted husband, Edwin J. Berrong; her loving parents, Tom and Bonnie Jenkins; and her cherished siblings, Jerry Jenkins, Joyce Kimsey, and Jimmye Harmon. Though she has departed this world, her legacy endures through her devoted son, Gary “Goat” Berrong (Angela) of Hiawassee, and her beloved daughter, Robyn Henson of Hiawassee. She was the proud and adoring grandmother of Alicia Strange (Corry) of Knoxville, TN, Kristen Henson, and Kennedi Henson of Hiawassee, and the doting great-grandmother of Tory, Cohen, and Mally Strange. Manita’s love extended to a host of nieces and nephews, each of whom she treasured dearly.

Affectionately known as “The Queen” by her granddaughters, Manita epitomized elegance, kindness, and unwavering grace. However, it was her steadfast devotion to Christ that truly defined her. A longtime member of McConnell Memorial Baptist Church, she was a cornerstone of the Hiawassee community—admired, respected, and beloved by all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her seemingly ageless vitality left many marveling at her secret to eternal youth, a mystery she carried with her into eternity. Raised in Young Harris, GA, Manita was a proud graduate of Towns County High School before pursuing her passion at beauty school in Macon, GA. This path led her to a lifelong career in the beauty industry, where she owned and operated a successful salon—her "beauty shop," as she lovingly called it—for over 60 years. Though she was not a veteran, she served her country with dedication by working in a factory that produced propellers for warplanes during World War II, a testament to her strength and patriotism.

The family wishes to extend heartfelt gratitude to all who have shared their love, condolences, and cherished memories of Manita during this difficult time. A special acknowledgment is given to Laverne Shook for her unwavering friendship and the compassionate care she so graciously provided over the years—kindness that will never be forgotten. Though her presence will be deeply missed, Manita’s spirit will forever shine in the hearts of those she touched. Her love, laughter, and faith will continue to inspire generations to come.
