Daniel Miles Berrong, age 75 of Hiawassee, Georgia, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, after a brief illness at Union General Hospital on Wednesday, July 10, 2024. He was born to the late Mr. and Mrs. Ray and Opal (Nicholson) Berrong in Hiawassee on July 11, 1948. He had three brothers and a sister. He graduated from Towns County High School in 1966. He later enlisted in the Air Force and was honorably discharged due to medical issues. Daniel found the love of his life, Diane Gibson, in September 1970 and married her three short months later. Daniel and Diane created a beautiful family together that continues to grow. Daniel is a member of Bell Scene Baptist Church. He served his community in law enforcement for many years. He worked as a deputy sheriff with Towns County Sheriff’s Office from 1984 until 1997; He was a police officer for Hiawassee Police Department from 2006 until 2010, when he retired. Daniel enjoyed spending time with his family, riding his motorcycle, hunting, fishing, camping, and watching classic westerns. He was married to Diane for 53 years before her passing earlier this year. Daniel is preceded in death by his beautiful wife, Diane; parents, Ray and Opal Berrong, and brother, Phillip Berrong. He leaves behind his daughters, Sherry (Wayne) Canterbury, Becky (John) Landress, Lisa (Michael) West; siblings and their spouses, David and Ann Berrong, Bud and Brenda Berrong, and Shirley and Frank Blair; grandchildren, Tyler (Peita) Smith, Cody (Tori) Canterbury, Chelsea (Jaye) Arnold, Whitley (Michael) Phillips, Brett (Paige) Barrett, Madison (Kobe) Denton, Zach (Lea) Landress, Colton (Caitlyn) West, and Caylyn (Dylan) Carmichael; thirteen great-grandchildren and two more on the way; along with a host of extended family and friends. Pallbearers are Tyler Smith, Cody Canterbury, Brett Barrett, Triston Arnold, Colton West, and Dylan Carmichael; honorary pallbearers are Jaye Arnold, Michael Phillips, and Kobe Denton. Reverend Kevin Moss officiating. Family will receive visitors at Banister-Cooper Funeral Home on Friday, July 12th from 11:00 – 2:00; funeral service at 2:00 at Banister-Cooper Funeral Home. Daniel will be laid to rest beside his loving wife at Bell Scene Baptist Church Cemetery.
