Sharon Marie Laing Mackey of Lathrup Village died Sunday, May 4th, 2025, after a nine-year battle with cancer and a lifetime filled with generosity of spirit, love for others, and unwavering faith. She was 48 years old.
Sharon was born December 3, 1976 to Ronald T. and Christine (Szczerbinski) Laing in Detroit. She was a graduate of Marian High School, Albion College, and the University of Detroit Mercy. Sharon taught math at Marian and spent the majority of her career at Plymouth High School. She was a violinist with the Dearborn Symphony, and a parishioner of Church of the Transfiguration.
Sharon developed a love for music at an early age and was a life-long violinist. Following her youth and college ensembles, she played with the Livonia and Dearborn Symphonies. She also enjoyed singing with her church choir where she was often selected to cantor, solo, and accompany the choir on her violin. For many years, Sharon was the lead singer of a local band, Liquid Six. It was through this that a mutual friend introduced her to the love of her life, Joe, making her soul complete.
Sharon's true passion was teaching. She loved challenging her students and opening their eyes to the wonders of math. She cherished connecting with them and seeing them as more than a grade on a test; instead, she saw them as whole people with gifts, talents, challenges, and a world before them for the taking. She invested time before and after school in students who needed extra help, whether with their lessons or with life. Her colleagues and co-teachers were a second family that were deeply cherished.
Although music and teaching were an important part of who Sharon was, what defined her was her ability to make every person she met feel important and loved. Sharon will be missed by so many people: friends made through her seasonal Detroit Tiger tickets, her treasured friends from high school, cousins, neighbors, colleagues, students, parishioners, fellow musicians, and people she met through the course of everyday life.
Sharon is survived by her beloved husband, Joseph Mackey, father Ronald, siblings, Susan (Alexander), Ronald C. (Nicole) and Andrew (Kristin), parents-in-law Donna and Mickey Reynolds, and Robert and Nancy Mackey, siblings-in-law Rob (Kelly), Heather (Ben), Bryan (Angie), and dearest nieces and nephews, Elias, Charles, Christine, Grayson, Colin, Harper, Liam, Londynn, Easton, Kenna, Karson, Ethan (Alyssa), Nina, and Nikos, many beloved friends, colleagues, and students. She is preceded in death by her mother, Christine and brother-in-law Daniel.
Visitation will take place at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 1368 N. Crooks, Clawson, Sunday, May 11th from 2-6pm with a rosary at 5:30pm. The Funeral Mass will be offered at Church of the Transfiguration, 25225 Code Road, Southfield, Monday, May 12th at 10am. Friends may visit at church beginning at 9:30am. Internment will follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Southfield.
Donations in Sharon's honor and memory are welcome to the SJ5K, a non-profit founded by students in the Plymouth-Salem Educational Park that supports local families and individuals in crisis. Sharon was a gracious recipient of an Sj5K award and an avid supporter of the organization and the devoted students who organize this annual event.

Mrs. Mackey was the kindest teacher I have ever met and had the privilege to be taught by. She was truly a light in so many people“s lives and her generosity will be remembered by all of her students. She had so much positivity, even when she was going through so much. She always made sure to check up on me, and I always made sure to bring her some type of candy each week after her chemo treatments. I speak for myself and many others when I say she will truly be missed. Those who were lucky enough to know her will always be inspired by her bravery and perseverance. Sending my deepest condolences to her family and friends. Rest in peace.

Sharon brought a life and energy to this world that nobody else could replace. We met in college, we were sorority sisters and spent countless hours together in both band and orchestra (Sharon played not only the violin but also the trombone). It was rare to see Sharon without her fantastic smile. Her joy for life and ability to connect with others was a gift impossible not to notice. Heaven has gained an angel, that's for certain. I take comfort in knowing that Sharon's body is now fully healed and there is no more suffering for her. She is truly at peace with her Savior. Praying for all of us who loved her to take comfort in that, and to find joy in life, as she would want. Rest well, friend. Io Triumphe. xoxo
