Sharon Monaghan Porter
1955-2025
It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Sharon Monaghan Porter who passed away suddenly on October 16, 2025, just a few weeks after celebrating her 70th birthday.
Sharon was born on September 23, 1955 to the late Paul A. Monaghan, Sr. and Patricia Monaghan (nee Woerner). She attended William Penn High School in New Castle, Delaware where she met her future husband of 42 years, Howard A. Porter, Jr. Shortly after highschool, Sharon began her career with the Department of Veterans Affairs at the Wilmington VA Medical Center, dedicating 40 years of her life to public service. During her tenure, Sharon advanced through the ranks and ultimately retired as Chief of Environmental Services in 2014. Beyond her professional achievements at the VA, Sharon forged cherished, life-long friendships that served as an enduring source of love, laughter, and support throughout her life. In her retirement, Sharon enjoyed spending time with her close friends and family, but most of all, Sharon happily embraced her next chapter as a grandmother to her grandchildren, who knew her as the one and only "Mimi" with a never-ending supply of funny antics and the best hugs.
Sharon is survived by her husband, Howard, her daughters, Kerry Porter (Jamie) and Trisha Porter (Matt), her grandchildren, Colin, Ella, and Mac, her sister Nancy Nardo (Dominick), her brother Mark Monaghan (Janice), her brother-in-law William Porter (Kelly), sister-in-law Jeanne Ridley, and a host of extended family, loyal friends, and supportive neighbors. Sharon was preceded in death by her parents, Paul Sr. (1973) and Patricia (2023), her sisters, Michele (1963), Marie (2010), and Patti (2023), and her brother, Paul Jr. (2010).
Services will be held at Krienen-Griffith Funeral Home in Elsmere, Delaware on Saturday, October 25, 2025. Visitation will take place from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m., followed by a Celebration of Life service at 11:00 am.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Irish Culture Club of Delaware, in honor of Sharon's love of her family's Irish heritage, or to any organization supporting military veterans, in honor of Sharon's 40 years of service to the Department of Veterans Affairs.
