OBITUARY: Shirley Spitz, of Atlanta, passed away peacefully on November 19, 2023, two weeks before her 94th birthday. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 65 ½ years, Dr. A. Edward Spitz. Survivors include her son, Kenneth Spitz, Michigan; daughter and son-in-law, Ellen Spitz and Harvey Spiegel, Atlanta; daughter and son-in-law, Suzanne Spitz and David Holland-Moritz, California; grandchildren: Michael Spitz, Nicole Spitz, Daniel and Emma Spiegel, Jonathan and Emily Spiegel, Kevin and Leah Spiegel, Hannah Holland-Moritz, Daniel Holland-Moritz and Noah Holland-Moritz; and great grandchildren Rosemary, Sienna, Milo, Lyla, and Seth Spiegel. Shirley grew up in New York City and attended the City College of New York, where she met her husband. Many years later, she completed her bachelor's degree in mathematics from Indiana State University and a master's degree in education from Eastern Michigan University. She was a long time math teacher in the Ann Arbor Public schools. She loved teaching, but her passion was cooking, particularly international cuisine. She joined a monthly dinner club where they prepared new dishes and enjoyed different cuisines. Shirley enjoyed accompanying her husband on study abroad programs with his students. In retirement, she learned to paint with watercolors, traveled with her husband internationally and regularly traveled to visit her children and grandchildren. She particularly enjoyed having her grandchildren come to her house and always made her famous oatmeal cookies for them. Her family was truly the source of her greatest joy. A graveside service will be held at 1:00 pm on November 28 at Arlington Memorial Park in Sandy Springs with Rabbi Max Miller officiating.

I loved Ms. Spitz. She was my 7th and 8th grade math teacher. She made learning math fun, although it was always a tough subject for me. I remember her helping my 7th grade math class learn about math through needle point geo-designs.. I would run into her, again, in 1994 when her son was attending Eastern Michigan University and was a student in one of my integration of music into the general education curriculum classes. "Thank you Shirley, for touching my life" Light, love and all good thoughts your way. Love, Jeffrey Willets
