Shoshana Levinson, a spirited and spiritual woman, is gone from us following a long and valiant battle with metastatic cancer. She passed peacefully during the early morning hours of Wednesday, December 18, 2024 after having said her goodbyes to family and close friends. She was born Susan Ruth Levinson to Allen and Esther Levinson on June 3rd, 1952. Shoshana was raised in Bridgeport, Connecticut, the youngest of three siblings. She graduated from the University of Connecticut with a Bachelor's and from the University of Bridgeport with a Master's degree in Biology and Nutrition. She worked as a successful nutritionist in her own practice in Mansfield and in doctor's offices in West Hartford, Simsbury and Orange, CT, and online via her website (www.eatwellusa.com). She and her husband Chris Crossgrove were married for 42 years. In addition to Chris, she is survived by their son Jeremy Crossgrove, his wife Denise Nightingale, and grandson Marlowe of Revere, MA, sister Marsha Mason of Windsor, brother George Levinson of Hamden; nieces Peri Mason of New Jersey, Jessica Mason Rioux of Windsor, Cathy Ross of Alabama and many relatives and friends. She was a Master Gardener and loved being outdoors, whether hiking in the woods, tending her own extensive and beautiful gardens and bonsai trees or visiting arboretums and public gardens each year on her birthday. She enjoyed visiting and improving their land in the forests of Vermont where they built an off grid cabin by hand. While in her 20's she lived year-round in a teepee in the woods of CT. Shoshana and family loved to travel and visited places both near and far including Mexico, Costa Rica, France, Ireland, Italy and Israel. She will always be remembered as a strong willed, opinionated liberal with a kind heart. She was a political and anti-war activist and a counselor for the GI Rights Hotline. She loved music, singing, and was her sister's favorite swing dance partner. She was enthusiastic about food, cooking and eating well. In the 1970s she ran the kitchen at the Shaboo Inn-the famous music venue in Mansfield. She was a founding member of the Willimantic Food Coop in the early 1980's. She recorded and produced an Audio CD in 2008, "Mindful-Eating; Making Peace with Food" and wrote the column "Food for Thought" for The Willimantic Chronicle for several years. Shoshana was also a devoted volunteer docent at the Benton Museum of Art and the Gurleyville Grist Mill. Her courage, resilience and bravery in facing her diagnosis was an inspiration to all who knew her. Always facing challenges head on and aiming to improve circumstances for others she initiated a chapter of the international Death Cafe' at the Unitarian Universalist Church in Manchester, CT, where she and Chris were members and sang in the choir. As a force of nature and love she will never be forgotten by the legions of friends and relatives who had the pleasure of walking with her through life.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the Unitarian Universalist Society East, 153 Vernon Street W., Manchester, CT Saturday, February 1, 2025 at 1pm with a snow date of February 15th)

Shoshana was larger than life, offering her special talents and joys to all, without reserve. We are definitely richer for having known and loved her. Peace to her, and to all who loved her.

If there were a recipe for life, it might call for 2 tablespoons of zest. I can imagine Shoshana reading that and saying, "I'll try a cup," and loving the results. She was perhaps the zestiest person I've ever met. She would elevate, energize and enliven any situation.
Her enthusiasm and energy are legendary. She could turn a chance encounter, in the aisles of the Coop or at music events at UConn or the Hampton Library, into special times. She loved talking and listening and sincerely wanted to know about you and your family. She was a wonderful person and a true friend to so many.
I extend my family's sympathies to Chris and family as well as to the entire community on the loss of a true and unique treasure.

Shoshana was a perpetual spark of energy, enthusiastic, fiercely intelligent and always ready to interact warmly with others. She had a great sense of humor and an infectious laugh. Shoshana was a wonderful friend that is dearly missed by our whole family. The memory of her will always be an inspiration.

Shosh was a force of nature, a busy woman with bold opinions and strong boundaries. I remember her fondly for cooking together and having matching aprons when I was little. We always loved to talk food. She was one of my biggest cheerleaders and encouraged me to pursue my dreams and passions.

I first met Shoshana when she took over running the kitchen at the Shaboo Inn and made a seismic change to the menu. Then you could enjoy a bagel or a veggie burger late in the evening for the first time. Always ready to get out there and dance to great live music, she lived life to the fullest all the time as her published life story shows. We shared many a dance floor and I was sad to hear of her passing. Dance on, my friend!

My first memory of Shoshanna was talking to her about a friend of mine who had just come out of the closet (in about 1975 or 1976). We discussed how upset he was with himself and she said "why don't you invite him to the Gay Alliance dance at the skating rink hut tonight?". I thought, what a nice thing to say and suggest. My friend and his partner have been together for about 43 years now. I often wonder what would have happened to him if it wasn't for Shoshanna's suggestion. She was an absolute force of nature! You never knew when she and Chris might drop by in a Pink Cadillac (driven by Jan)!

Shoshana and Brenda and I worked at the food truck and the coop where it began in the church basement of St Paul´s, I believe. We also worked together at The Whole in the Wall vegetarian restaurant inside the Shaboo. I remember her as living in a tent and camping in our yard on Chestnut Street in Willimantic. Every once in a while we would randomly bump into each other at a Willimantic event. She always beamed that beautiful smile of hers and we would start dancing. She was a brilliant light. May the blessings be. Joy Barber Teed

Never heard an unkind word from or about this woman. Sorry we never got to play that game of 10 point pitch.

Shoshanna was always so generous with her attention and kindness. Taking the time to really inquire about my life and interests and sharing about her adventures and the loves in her life. This was during a earlier window of knowing her back in the 2000's while visiting the land she shared in VT with friends who visited. She always radiated joy and strength. I very much admired those qualities about her! I also loved hearing all the stories anout how the Willi Food Coop got its start. What a treasure gone too soon!

Years ago Shoshana helped me with my hypoglycemia. Her knowledge and solution for it and another health issue made a big difference for me. I also enjoyed dancing with her on different community event occasions. I loved her smile.

What a smile she had! We met in the spring of 1984. At one point or another we started calling one another Selma and Sadie. Eventually those names became interchangeable!

When I first came to Storrs in 2005 Shosh took me under her wing and introduced me to everyone in the community everywhere. I felt so lucky she was Marc´s cousin and was so generous with her time.

Picking out a dress for the wedding...

Shosh and I had a good time doing unusual pranks together like swapping dresses and shoes one New Year's Eve when out at Husky Blues. The other restaurant patrons voted on who looked better in which dress!
