Memorial service for Stanley M. Martin, 83, of Piedmont, Alabama will be Friday, October 24, 2025 at 1:00 p.m. at Thompson Funeral Home. The family will receive friends Friday from 11:00 a.m. until time of the service. Stanley passed away at his home and went to be with the Lord on Thursday, October 16, 2025. He was born July 28, 1942, and raised in Anniston, Alabama. He attended school in the Saks community, attending Anniston High School. He graduated from Jacksonville State University and went on to Tulane University earning a master's degree in Biostatistics. After graduate school, Stan entered the U.S. Army as the only Biostatistician in the service at that time. He was stationed at Walter Reid Medical Center during the Vietnam war. Stan left the service, moving to Stone Mountain, Georgia where he and his wife Kay raised their family. He went to work for the CDC in Atlanta for 30 years in the Epidemiology Branch as Chief of Biostatistics, working in public health relating to infectious disease. During his career he traveled all over the world and was involved in the investigation of numerous high-profile outbreaks of disease and infection. He was the first to embrace the internet for his division (of 150 people) and was perceived as an IT visionary at that time. Wherever he was in the world, Stan had a strong faith and close walk with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. He was always active in his church, teaching or serving wherever he lived. Most recently, he and his wife have been members of White Plains Baptist Church in Anniston, Alabama. After retirement, Stan and his wife Kay moved to Piedmont, Alabama and built a home on the land that they loved so dearly. He did much of the construction work himself. During his life Stan had many hobbies such as bee keeping, blueberry farming, and especially his love of working with wood. He enjoyed making furniture and grew to love working with his lathe, turning wood pieces such as bowls, ornaments, vases, etc. Even before moving back to Alabama, Stan and his brother Larry, spent years restoring log cabins and studying primitive life in the south. Family was always important to Stan. He was married to his loving wife, Kay for over 60 years. He was preceded in death by his parents, A.H. Martin and Lenora Martin, sisters Marie Martin Kidd and Jan Martin Harris, and daughter Anna Martin Bury. He is survived by his wife, Sandra Kay Martin, son Peter T. Martin, brother Larry K. Martin, sister Phyllis Martin Canup, grandchildren Taylor W. Martin and Margaret L. Martin, and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Samaritan's Purse International Relief (samaritanspurse.org).
