CHARLOTTE – Dr. Stephen Winston Lucas passed away on Friday, February 10, 2023. He was born in Spartanburg, SC to John W. Lucas and Nancy Broome Lucas.
Steve was a 1977 graduate of East Mecklenburg High School where he made many lifelong friends and was very involved in Young Life. He graduated from Wake Forest University in 1981 with his Bachelor of Arts in Sociology. Steve continued his education at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary where he received his Master of Divinity and Emory University for his Doctor of Ministry. He served fifteen years as a senior minister for many large multi-staff congregations in North Carolina, Florida, Illinois, Washington and Texas. Steve served as chaplain of the North Carolina Senate from 1995-2000. Later, Steve worked in varied organizations including non-profits, corporations and state government providing consulting, coaching and strategic planning. He also created leadership development and employee empowerment programs at two large electric cooperatives in Texas. In 2013, Steve formed his own consulting company, Transitions-in-Balance, and worked with many organizations to bring the concepts of conflict resolution, communication, team building and change management to the everyday workplace. Steve appreciated art, music and movies and was passionate about the creative process. He enjoyed playing golf, tennis and racquetball. Steve was a storyteller, and his laughter could fill a room. He held a infinite and deep love for his family and friends.
Stephen is survived by his mother, Nancy B. Lucas of Charlotte; daughter, Jessie Erin Lucas and her mother, Carol Osborne Lucas of Austin, TX and his cousin, Lee Squires of Louisville, KY. He also leaves behind many friends who loved him dearly and whose lives he touched. Steve was preceded in death by his father, John W. Lucas.
The family is grateful for the caregivers at Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center and the Levine & Dickson Hospice House at Southminster.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, March 4, 2023, in the chapel at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 101 Colville Road, Charlotte, NC.

I spoke with Steve, and Jessie who was with him, on the phone when he was in the hospital in Charlotte. Steve and I served together on the staff at FBC Goldsboro, NC, in the mid 1980´s. He was creative and passionate. Indeed, I remember that laugh described in these obit remembrances. We were ordained the same day, January 1986. I tracked Steve down about 15 years ago... we caught up with each other...then he caught up with me a few months ago to talk about his health challenges. I am grateful for our shared ministry experiences. Prayers for and blessings to his wife and daughter, and his mother. Fred DeFoor

I am saddened to hear of the passing of Stephen Lucas. As one of several pastors at our church over the recent years, he will long be remembered as one of my favorites. Steve came to our church at a time when the congregation had become separated. He worked effectively to mend relationships and reunite our church family.
Steve was a gifted speaker and story teller. His sermons were always engaging with stories and experiences that were relatable, compassionate and humorous. My heart goes out to his friends and family.
