Stephen Maize Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by DeMoss-Durdan Funeral Home and Crematory - Corvallis on Aug. 21, 2025.
Stephen Otice Maize arrived in this world August 13, 1952, and departed August 9, 2025. Stephen was born in Palo Alto, California and spent most of his childhood in Idaho, where he lived with his parents who were traveling teachers. He was the nephew of a Nobel Prize winner for science and if you had the pleasure of knowing Stephen you would see those traits in him, as he was a very bright man who loved the logic of all things scientific. A child of the love generation, he arrived in Corvallis with long red hair and a silver flute. One of the things that always stood out was his ever bright, shining and curious eyes. He attended Oregon State University where he placed at the top of his classes and graduated with a bachelor's degree in economics. Stephen was an accomplished artist, and in his youth won every art show he entered. Insight and wisdom are held by few people; Stephen was one of those rare ones. After he read One Flew Over the Coo-coo's Nest he was inspired to become an orderly at the Oregon State psychiatric hospital. This is just another side to this multifaceted man. Stephen had a great love of flying and became a pilot, licensed to fly both helicopters and aircraft. On sunny afternoons he enjoyed flying friends and admirers over the coastal range, especially Marys Peak. He was always dreaming and asking questions with childlike wonder. A man for all seasons, he is near impossible to give full voice. He asked for only joy at his passing. For those of us who knew him this is quite a challenge. He is dearly loved and missed. A celebration of Stephen's life will be held for him at the Interzone Coffee House in Corvallis on Saturday, September 13, 2025, from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
