Stephen Neal Smith, of Covington, passed away peacefully on Monday, January 20, 2025 at the age of 81. He was born on July 19, 1943, grew up in Covington and graduated from Byars Hall High School. He received an undergraduate degree from Memphis State University. Stephen was a pillar of the community and improved the lives of countless people lucky enough to call him a friend. Moreover, Stephen had a meaningful impact on the broader community through his wide-ranging philanthropy. Stephen was a devout member of First United Methodist Church in Covington, Tennessee, for 52 years and has served on multiple committees at the church. He was Chairman of the Building Fund Committee for the Christian Life Center, taught Sunday School, served as a youth counselor and volunteered for Arise to Read. Stephen was vice president, CFO and office manager of Jamison & Fisher, Inc. where he worked for over 50 years and retired at the age of 80. Additionally, he was a former member of the Board of Directors of Tipton County Bank (now Cadence Bank). Stephen also previously served as the president of the Covington-Tipton County Chamber of Commerce. Stephen enjoyed spending his leisure time with family and friends. He loved attending his grandchildrens sporting events. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed spending time at the lake. Stephen is predeceased by his father Lyman Smith, mother Lola Smith, and brother John Smith.He is survived by his wife of 58 years Kaye Parr Billings Smith, son Chad Billings Smith (Leigh); son Benjamin Neal Smith (Stacy); and grandchildren Madeline Langley Smith, Stephen Huffman Smith, Benjamin Billings Smith, Christopher David Smith, Charles West Smith and Collier Neal Smith; his brother Kenneth Smith (Betty); his brother Paul Smith (Kay), his sister Cathy Oliver (Claude Simonton) and sister-in-law Carolyn Smith. His impact on those who loved, knew, and worked with him was profound, and he will be sorely missed.Visitation will be held in the sanctuary of First United Methodist Church from 10 a.m. to noon on Thursday, January 23, with a memorial service in the church at noon, and burial service to follow at Covington Memorial Gardens.In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be directed towards the First United Methodist Church Building fund or a charitable organization of choice.
