Steven D. Slaight, age 78, passed away peacefully on March 4, 2026, in
Jones, Oklahoma. He was born on May 2, 1947, in
Muskogee, Oklahoma, a hometown he loved deeply and proudly carried with him throughout his life.
Steve grew up in Muskogee and graduated from Muskogee Central High School in 1965, where he was a proud Rougher and cherished the lifelong friendships he made with his classmates. He went on to attend Oklahoma State University, graduating with a Bachelor's degree in Chemistry. A loyal Cowboy at heart, he remained a proud Oklahoma State fan throughout his life. Steve spent many years as the owner and operator of American Car Rental in Muskogee, serving his community with dedication. He later continued his career with the Veterans Affairs, where he eventually retired.
Steve was a man of many passions. He loved the theater and had a natural gift for performing and entertaining others. He also had a deep appreciation for motorcycles and the sense of freedom they brought him. More than anything, Steve loved spending time with family and friends-telling stories, sharing laughs, and reminiscing about the "remember when" moments that made life so rich. He had a quick wit, a love for a good joke, and a way of bringing joy to those around him.
Above all, Steve loved Jesus and lived out his faith openly. He spent time sharing the Word and encouraging others at local facilities, always eager to speak about the hope and peace he found in his faith. One of his favorite hymns was "It Is Well With My Soul," a song that reflected the quiet confidence he had in God. His favorite scripture was Philippians 4:8: "Now dear brothers and sisters, fix your thoughts on whatever is true, honorable, right, pure, lovely and admirable. Think on these things that are excellent and worthy of praise."
Steve was preceded in death by his parents, Joe Ben Slaight and Gloria Vaught Slaight, and by his beloved grandson, Jaxon Slaight, who passed away in 2015.
He is survived by his children: Jennifer Starcevich Clark of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; Andra Munoz of Owasso, Oklahoma; Tyler Slaight of Tulsa, Oklahoma; and Maggie VanDaley of
Muskogee, Oklahoma. He is also survived by his sister, Glenna Slaight of Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Steve was a proud grandfather to Max Munoz, Brooks Munoz, Tripp Munoz, Champ Munoz, Joey Slaight, August Slaight, Briar VanDaley, Parker John Easton, and Mia Easton. Each of his grandchildren held a special place in his heart.
He also leaves behind two very important people in his life, Randa Smith Slaight and Cheryl Martin, along with many extended family members and dear friends who will miss him greatly.
Steve will be remembered for his strong faith, his humor, his storytelling, and the way he could make any gathering feel warm and full of life. His love for his family, his friends, and his faith will remain a lasting legacy to all who knew him.
His life was well lived, and as his favorite hymn reminds us, it is well with his soul.
