Stuart G. Ashman, M.D. 98 years old, of
Virginia Beach, VA died on November 9, 2025, surrounded by his loving children.
He was born in Baltimore, MD on July 12, 1927 to the late William and Isabel Ashman. He was predeceased by his brothers Murray G., Norton J., and Berton W. Ashman.
Dr. Ashman was a graduate of Maury High School, the College of William and Mary and the Medical School of the University of Virginia.
He served in the Army Air Corps in Europe from 1945 to 1947.
He was happily married to the former Dolores (Lorrie) Plummer Holland for 57 years before she died in 2010. He is survived by his son William H. (Carol) of Virginia Beach and two daughters, Catherine A. Vansant (John) of Hanover, NH and Emilie A. Serratelli (Arthur) of
Virginia Beach, VA, and six beloved grandchildren: Emilie Claire Vansant (Roman), William Stuart Serratelli (Hannah), John Henry Vansant (Charlotte), Zoe Elizabeth Darin (Patrick), Nicolas Alexander Ashman and Christopher William Ashman.
After completing his post-graduate medical training at Yale and Cornell, he joined the Cornell Medical School's clinical faculty and practiced psychiatry in New York City from 1955-65. He and Lorrie then moved to
Virginia Beach, VA where he opened the city's first psychiatric practice. He was President of the Medical staff at Virginia Beach General Hospital in 1969. In 1970, he helped to found the Tidewater Psychiatric Institute (TPI) with hospitals in Norfolk and Virginia Beach, and Serenity Lodge, an Addictions Inpatient Program in Chesapeake, VA. He served TPI as Medical Director, CEO and Chairman of its Board of Directors until his retirement in 1987. He was a member of the clinical faculty of Eastern Virginia Medical School and an active member of a number of local, state and national medical and hospital associations. He also held a variety of offices in them, including President of the Psychiatric Society of Virginia and Vice-President of the National Association of Psychiatric Hospitals. He was elected a Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association.
The Cremation Society of Virginia is handling final arrangements. Burial will be at a later date and will be private. Memorial gifts in lieu of flowers may be made to the Virginia Beach Rescue Squad or to a
charity of your choice.
