Susan Cushing Meisinger, 103 of Landsdowne VA passed away peacefully on August 14, 2025.
Susan was born on September 19, 1921 to Susan B. and Richard W. Cushing of Washington DC. She graduated from Central High School (now Cardoza) in 1939. She attended the University of Maryland for two years majoring in pre-nursing. She dropped out so her older brother could continue his studies. She married Claude Anderson Webb, Jr. in April 1942. She followed him to his training posts when she could as he was in the new Army Air Corps. In June 1944, they had a son, Claude A. Webb III (Terry). Followed by a daughter, Susan Marie and a son, Richard Cushing. Claude pursued a career in personnel and recruiting. They moved the family frequently as he followed his career. She made a home in every place they moved. After 21 years, they divorced. In 1968, she married Thomas V. Bollech, a widower. She happily became mom to his children, Sonja and J. Gregory. Tragedy struck 13 months later when Tom died from a heart attack. Now a widow with five children, she held us all together. Her sister took her to a Central High School alum tea where she had a chance encounter with an old high school boyfriend. This led to marriage four years later in 1969. H. Peter Meisinger brought to the marriage three sons, Shannon, Daniel and Mark from his first marriage. As a widower, he remarried and had a daughter, Mary. While the marriage ended in divorce, his love and pride of his daughter never wavered. Mom and Pete pulled us all together against enormous odds. Sonja (Bill), Terry (Joyce) and Daniel (Sue) were all married. Susan just graduated from college. While Rick, Greg and Mark were at home for a while, Mark and Greg went to Viet Nam and Rick was in college. Through time together at their beach condo, celebrating the holidays, birthdays, dinners out and phone calls, they knit us together as a family. Holiday gatherings were fun as we were in the same age cohort so more of party gatherings. Mom took up tennis in her 50s.With all the moves and family demands and work, she didn't have much leisure time. For short periods of time, she could find her interests in the towns we moved to, such as horse back riding, skiing, painting and sketching. She earned her pilot wings at 19. In her 80s, she flew with a family friend who was a pilot. He surprised her by turning over the controls to her. She recovered her shock and flew the plane. Afterwards, shrugged it off as a Piper Cub is still a Piper. She and Pete traveled extensively together. They started married life in Hawaii. Added European destinations, South America and the Caribbean as well. After Pete's death, she continued to travel for as long as her stamina held.
Sue had an amazing life full of challenges, rich experiences, loved many and was loved by all in return. At 103, many have predeceased her. Carrying for her memories are her children, their spouses, grand children, great grand children and a great-great grand child.
Services are scheduled for 11 a.m., September 19, 2025 at Money and King Funeral Home, 171 Maple Avenue, Vienna Virginia.
