Suzanne Erb Cashin, beloved daughter of the late Sarah Anne Smith and the late Dr. William Henry Erb, passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 8th, 2025. She was born on Saturday, March 22nd, 1941, in Philadelphia. She was raised in Ridley Park, PA where she attended the Tome Street School, and Ridley Park High School before moving on to The Catholic University of America where she obtained her Bachelor's of Science in Nursing, magna cum laude, in 1963. Upon graduation she moved to Assmannshausen, Germany where she worked for a year as a nurse. She then returned to Catholic University and began graduate studies in cardiovascular disease nursing. She left just a few credits shy of her master's degree to marry William Joseph Cashin, Jr. Susie & Bill wed on September 30th, 1967. The two began their married life together in Detroit where Susie worked at Henry Ford Hospital. In September of 1969, upon a job transfer to New York City for Bill, the two moved to a home on Williams Road in Chatham. They never left. Susie paused her nursing career to focus on raising their two daughters, Sarah & Elizabeth. She reveled in motherhood. And she just loved being a home maker. Susie sewed her girls' Halloween costumes & First Communion dresses, knit their Christmas stockings, baked their birthday cakes from scratch, delighted in cleaning her home and loved to get her hands dirty in her garden where her mantra was more is always better – her flower beds were filled to the brim with daffodils & crocus every spring.
Susie loved a celebration – be it a holiday, a birthday or a homecoming. Entertaining brought her much joy, as did spending time with her friends. She was a dedicated volunteer. She taught CCD at Corpus Christi Parish, served as President of the Southern Boulevard School PTO, and was a class parent more years than not while her girls were in school. Later, she belonged to the Town & Country Garden Club, served on the board of the Senior Center of the Chathams, and worked with the Development School for Youth in Newark. In what little down time she had, she studied watercolor painting - initially with Barbara Kellogg and later with Ed Havas. Susie resumed her career on a part time basis when her girls reached their teen years. First, as a substitute nurse in the Chatham Township School District & at the corporate offices of ATT / Bell Labs. In 1999 she transitioned to full-time work as a disability case manager at Prudential where she spent ten years, retiring in 2009.
Susie delighted in retirement. She loved traveling the world with Bill. Favorite destinations were Reid's Hotel in Madeira, Migis Lodge on Sebago Lake in Maine, and Avalon, NJ. But what made her happiest of all was spending time with her 3 grandchildren.
Susie is survived by her devoted husband of 57 years, Bill; daughter Sarah DeTraglia & son-in-law Scott; daughter Elizabeth Cashin & son-in-law Richard Girards; grandchildren Sarah Faith Girards, Tommy Girards, & Leo DeTraglia along with her beloved granddogs Jeter & Stirling. She is also survived by her sister, Patsy Reohr & brother-in-law Jack; sister-in-law Ursula Erb; and her nieces & nephews – John Reohr, Marie Whiteside, Bill Reohr, Chris Reohr, Tom Reohr, Heidi Anderson, Kristin Gusick & Margit Erb. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her brother, William Henry Erb, Jr. The family would like to thank Karen Orr who served as Susie's faithful caretaker for these past 18 months. Karen was just wonderful to her.
Visitation will be held on Monday, March 17th, from 9-11am at Corpus Christi Church, 234 Southern Boulevard, Chatham. Susie's Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated immediately following at 11am. Interment will be private.
