Terry Anthony Lyon, 86 of Brownsburg, Indiana, entered eternal rest at 10:12 AM on Thursday, February 27th, 2025, at Independence Village of Avon. Terry's life began on Saturday, October 1st, 1938, in Peoria, Illinois. He was the oldest of five children born to the late John Maitland Lyon and Mary Margaret Virginia (Godar) Lyon.
Terry grew up in Illinois and graduated high school from Pekin Community High School with the class of 1956. While in high school he enjoyed playing trumpet in the school jazz band. Upon graduation, he attended the General Motors Institute/Flint, MI, where he earned a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering in 1961. His career in mechanical engineering began in Florida at Pratt and Whitney, before he moved his family to Indiana, settling in Zionsville, and accepting a position with General Motors
Detroit Diesel-Allison Division. Terry was a dedicated employee with Allison for over 30 years, retiring as Chief Engineer, Gas Turbine Division in 1995.
On October 9th, 1981, he was united in marriage to Valee June (Meador) Lyon, and she preceded him in death on August 23rd, 2020. The two shared nearly thirty-nine years of marriage. They initially lived in Zionsville, IN, later moved to Martinsville, IN, living in Painted Hills, and eventually moved to Brooksville, FL, where they resided for over twenty-five years. Terry loved living in Florida and thoroughly enjoyed being a member of the Manatee RV Club. He was also a longtime member of the Elks Lodge.
Retirement granted Terry an opportunity to explore many of his other interests and hobbies such as antiquing, woodworking, and cheering on the Indianapolis Colts. He was an extraordinary woodworker and spent countless hours in his woodshop making beautiful furniture, toys and other pieces.
He will be lovingly remembered by his family and friends for his civic and community engagement, patriotism, work ethic, intellect, wisdom, generosity and love for his family. His survivors include his two sons, David Lyon of Lebanon, IN, and Gregory (wife, Brenda) Lyon of Cloverdale, IN; daughter Ann Marie Lyon of Indianapolis, IN, and four daughters from his marriage to Valee, Sheila (husband, Jeff) Trent of Greenwood, IN, Sandy (husband, Mike) Hardin of Mooresville, IN, Sherry (husband, Lee) Butrum of Indianapolis, IN, and Schaun Hill of Mooresville, IN; three brothers, Tim (wife, Marie) Lyon of Arizona, Jon Lyon of Illinois and Kevin (wife, Joy) Lyon of Florida; one sister, Linda (husband, Dave) Nance of Florida; ten grandchildren and several great grandchildren. Along with his parents, Terry was preceded in death by his first wife, Barbara Ann (Breed) Lyon, mother of his children David, Gregory and Ann Marie Lyon.
Family and friends are invited to visit on Thursday, March 6th, 2025, from 4:00 PM – 6:00 PM at Neal & Summers Funeral Home in Martinsville. A service celebrating Terry's life will begin immediately following the visitation at 6:00 PM at the funeral. He will be laid to rest beside his late wife, Valee Lyon, following a private committal service in Nebo Memorial Park in Martinsville.
