Obituary published on Legacy.com by Canale Tonella Funeral Home and Cremation Services - Marquette on Jun. 7, 2023.
Dr. Thomas "Tom" Francis Huffman, 66, of Marquette, died Monday morning, June 5, 2023 at Trillium House, surrounded by his loving family and friends and under the care of U.P. Home Health and Hospice.
Tom was born on December 3, 1956 in
Denver, Colorado to the late Dr. Elston R. and Erma M. (Querciagrossa) Huffman. In 1958, the Huffman family moved to Marquette. Tom attended St. Michael Catholic Elementary School, Graveraet Junior High School, and was a 1975 graduate of Marquette Senior High School. He then enrolled at Northern Michigan University, receiving a Bachelor's Degree in Economics and Chemistry in 1979.
Tom graduated from Wayne State University Medical School in 1983 and served an internal medicine residency at the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee for three years. He received the Alpha Omega Alpha National Honor Society award for medical students.
Tom was employed with Himes and Napier Nephrologists in Marquette from 1986. He then joined Marquette Internal Medicine Associates where he was employed until he started Freedom Health Concierge Medicine on September 1, 2019. Tom served as president for the Medical Center for several decades. He also received a business leader award from the Marquette Rotary Club.
Tom had a deep passion for serving others, which was evident in everything he did. As a physician, he viewed his patients as family. It was not simply a career, but a vocation. It was not uncommon for Tom to make late-night house calls, drive patients to the hospital, feed them when they could no longer feed themselves, and be present with them during their last moments of life.
Above all, Tom loved his family (and his John Deere tractors). He and Jane were happily married 43 years. Together, they had two daughters. Tom was endlessly proud of his children and expressed his love and support for them daily. He also loved spending time with his sons-in-law doing projects at camp, his favorite place on earth.
Tom's three grandchildren were one of his greatest joys. He referred to them as his best friends, and loved bringing them to camp, attending their extracurricular activities, and eating popcorn in bed while watching movies together. He also adored his three grand puppies, Ranger, Cora and Ace.
Tom is survived by his wife, Jane (Koebele) Huffman; two daughters, Jennifer (Tyler) Krzewina and Kristina (David) Hillock, both of Marquette; three grandchildren, Rory, Maelynn and Natalie Krzewina; five siblings, Mary Ann Goad of Mesa, AZ, Elaine (Kirk) Wilcox of Logan, UT, Frederick Huffman of Marquette, Lucille (Bill) Chrisman of Traverse City, MI, and Carolyn Huffman of
Tampa, FL; also surviving are numerous nieces and nephews. Preceding Tom in death besides his parents was an infant sister, Carol Therese Huffman; brother-in-law, Richard Goad; mother-in-law, Joan Koebele, and nephew, John Koebele.
The Huffman family will greet relatives and friends on Sunday, June 11 at St. Michael Catholic Church from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Parish prayers will be led at the casket at 7 p.m. by Rev. Greg Heikkala and Deacon Scott Jamieson. Tom's body will lie in state overnight at St. Michael's. Family and friends are invited to spend time praying for him at any time between 7 p.m. until the time of the Funeral Mass Monday morning.
