Thomas Lowery, 75, of Roscoe, Illinois, passed away suddenly on Wednesday, February 26, 2025, in the presence of his beloved wife while recuperating from a traumatic brain injury.
Born on September 14, 1949, in Cartersville, South Carolina, Tom was the son of Charlie and Nettie (Hicks) Lowery. After the passing of his mother at the age of 16, Tom moved to New York to live with his sister Charlena, where he attended Boys High and played basketball. Answering the call to serve, Tom was drafted during the Vietnam War and enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He dedicated his life to military service, rising to the rank of Master Sergeant (E-8) before retiring after 28 years of service in 1995. Throughout his career, he took immense pride in his work and the many places he was stationed.
While serving at Glenview Naval Air Station, Tom met the love of his life, Dee Dee, and the two married in 1986. They shared a devoted and loving marriage until his passing.
Tom was a proud and devoted father to his children: Pamela Agee-Lowery, Desra (Lowery) Perez and his adopted son, Darron Lowery from previous relationships, and Brian Thomas Lowery, Sara (Lowery) Tusler, and Michelle Lowery with his wife, Dee Dee. He cherished each of his children and took great pride in their many accomplishments.
After retiring from the Marine Corps, Tom embarked on a new career with the Rockford Post Office, where he dedicated 14 years before retiring once again. However, retirement never truly suited him. He earned his CDL license and spent two years driving for First Student before joining Coach USA Van Galder, where he worked for 7 years until his passing.
Beyond his career, Tom had a deep passion for fishing. He enjoyed chartering trips on Lake Michigan in pursuit of salmon and treasured time spent fishing with his close friend Carlos on various lakes in Wisconsin. He was also an avid bowler, well-known and respected in the bowling community. Throughout his bowling career, he made many lifelong friends and achieved the remarkable feat of bowling two perfect 300 games. Tom cherished the time spent vacationing with his family, exploring many states across the U.S., visiting Canada, and embarking on 13 cruises to the Caribbean, creating countless cherished memories along the way.
Tom had a deep love for music and dancing, often turning the kitchen or patio into his own personal dance floor. His wife and daughters would frequently find him lost in his favorite songs, moving to the rhythm with joy.
He also never missed the chance to play the lottery, always believing, "If you don't play, you don't win." He shared this tradition with his daughter Michelle in California, often asking her to purchase tickets on his behalf, keeping the excitement alive across the miles.
Tom is survived by his loving wife, Dee Dee (Didier) Lowery; daughters, Pamela Agee-Lowery, Desra (Lowery) Perez and her husband Agustin, Sara (Lowery) Tusler and her wife Cassy, and Michelle Lowery; adopted son Darron Lowery; sister, Charlena (Lowery) Jones; brother, Levern Lowry; and sister, Helen (Hicks) Lewis. Grandchildren, Nadia Johnson and husband Timothy, Aaliyah Pete, Maya Delgado, Marley Perez, Darion Lowery; and great-grandchildren, Aidan Marshall, Journey and Legend Johnson. He also leaves behind many cherished nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Charlie and Nettie (Hicks) Lowery; his brothers, John Henry Lowery, Willie Mack Lowery, and Charles Keith Lowery; and his son, Brian Lowery.
Though Tom carried the tough exterior of a Marine, those who knew him best saw the heart of gold beneath. He was deeply loved by many and will be profoundly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the UW Hospital Neuroscience Unit in Madison, Wisconsin, and Van Matre Rehabilitation Institute for their care, support, and guidance during Tom's injury.
Visitation will be from 4:00pm to 8:00pm on Thursday, March 6, 2025 in Honquest Family Funeral Home with Crematory-Roscoe Chapel, 11342 Main St., Roscoe, IL 61073. Funeral service will be at 11:00am on Friday, March 7, 2025, also in the funeral home, with Pastor Dan Herman officiating and full military honors.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the family to assist with expenses, memorial costs, or other specific needs.
