Thomas Michael Magnafici of Dresser, Wisconsin, passed peacefully from this life on Wednesday, October 22, 2025.
Born on September 25, 1945, in Dixon, Illinois, Tom was one of ten children in a large Italian-Irish family. From the age of eight to fourteen, he lived at St. Vincent's Orphanage, an experience that shaped his strength, independence, and resilience.
Tom once dreamed of becoming a college history professor, but life-and the Vietnam War-led him down a different path. In 1966, he enlisted in the United States Army, where his leadership and determination quickly stood out. Selected for Officer Candidate School, Tom went on to serve at Fort Wainwright, Alaska, and completed Ranger School at Fort Benning, Georgia. He proudly served his country from 1966 to 1970, being honorably discharged at the rank of Captain.
After his military service, Tom pursued a life defined by creativity, intellect, and ambition. He built several successful businesses, each reflecting his belief in giving his all to any endeavor. His greatest competition was always himself, constantly striving to reach higher goals and new achievements.
A true Renaissance man, Tom was a lifelong learner whose curiosity knew no bounds. He was an avid reader, poet, and short-story writer; a lover of history, music, and the arts; and a passionate cook and wine connoisseur known for hosting unforgettable gatherings. His sharp wit, expansive vocabulary, and love of language made him a captivating conversationalist. Ask him about Ernest Hemingway, and he could discuss for hours. Ask about history, and he would bring the past vividly to life. Tom was also a fervent lover-and spoiler-of dogs ALL dogs.
Tom never met a stranger. He had a rare gift for making others feel seen and valued, and his quick humor and warmth drew people in. To those closest to him, his signature phrases-"Bye, love ya," "Hey buddy," and "Let me ask you "-were tokens of affection and connection.
Tom was preceded in death by his parents, six brothers, and three sisters. He is survived by his loving wife, Gae (Wycoff) Magnafici of Dresser, Wisconsin; his daughter, Dr. Amy (Patrick) Magnafici Strong of Chicago, Illinois; his grandsons, Seamus and Brady Lucas of Chicago; his daughter, Andrea Dowd of Dixon, Illinois; and his granddaughter, Abby Guthrie of Janesville, Wisconsin. His baby girl, Emma the Princess Dog, will surely miss him. He is also remembered with love by many nieces, nephews, and friends who will forever cherish his spirit, humor, and wisdom.
