Thomas P. Muelleman passed away peacefully on June 23, 2024 at 10:30 a.m., surrounded by the love of his family.
He was born on September 22, 1942, in Chicago, Illinois, to the late Clarence E. and Mary T. Muelleman, and was raised alongside his siblings, Clarence, Inez and Therese.
Tom was a loving husband to Joan C. (Vucko) Muelleman, and together they raised their daughters, Beth Ann (Mike) Costello and Cindy (Andy) Wegner. He was a beloved grandfather to Tristan (Lauren) Smith, Natalie Wegner, and Michael Costello. The memory of his grandson Hunter Thomas Smith, who preceded him in death, held a special place in Tom's heart.
Tom's formative years were spent in Chicago, where he attended St. Ignatius College Prep. He went on to earn a bachelor's degree at Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio and later achieved his master's degree from Concordia Teachers College. This foundation of academic excellence afforded Tom a lifelong love of learning and teaching and prepared him for a successful life of public service.
After college, Tom taught 8th grade at St. Alexander Catholic School in Palos Heights. It was there that he directed the school's theater program and impacted the lives of many young students. He later joined the U.S. Customs Service, where he built a distinguished career marked by his instrumental role in enhancing border security and protecting the value of international trade.Tom retired as a Supervisory Inspector, with many awards and letters of recognition. He most notably served as the Acting Director of the Combined Agency Border Intelligence Network (CABINET), where he was respected for his leadership and expertise.
An avid reader, Tom could often be found with a book in hand. He enjoyed woodworking and completed many creative projects in his home as well as cherished gifts for his family. Tom and Joan's annual trips to Florida were a highlight of his year, where together they enjoyed the beauty of Longboat Key and the happiness of Walt Disney World.
Tom will be deeply missed by all who knew him. He will be remembered for his intelligence, quick wit, and the love and wisdom he imparted.
Cremation rites have been accorded. A memorial service honoring Tom's life will be held on Friday, July 19th at 10:30 a.m., at DuPage Funeral Chapel, 951 W. Washington Street, West Chicago, Illinois. A Visitation will begin at 9:30 AM until the time of the service, also at the funeral home.
Memorials in Tom's memory may be made to benefit FXTAS research through the National Fragile X Foundation at FRAXA.org, or by mail to: 10 Prince Place, Suite 203, Newburyport, MA 01950.

My loving sympathies to all of Tom's family. He was talented, witty, intelligent and kind. Growing up, Tom was my "spare" brother, and he will remain that always in my heart. A gifted teacher himself, he led me to my first teaching position. It is no surprise that his career in the U.S.Customs Agency was so successful. Tom was an amazing thinker, a builder of ideas.
"As long as there is one person in this world who remembers you, it isn't over. "(From the production of "Carousel.")
If that is so, then Tom will be remembered over and over, forevermore.
With my sadness and love,
